food

Yummy Turkish and Middle Eastern specialties — including desserts — cooked with care and attention to detail by Kurdish chef Niyazi Tezik and pastry-chef wife Berivan, who opened this Islington hotspot in June 2016.

Located immediately around the corner from the far end of Chapel Market (ie away from Liverpool Rd), the restaurant is especially friendly, warm, homey and buzzy, and decorated with heart.

'Liman' translates as 'port' in Turkish, as in casual diners enjoying good food while ships come and go in the harbour within view.

Tube station: Angel, then a ten-minute walk, including the colourful Chapel Market.

With a hint towards a nautical theme (a compass painted on one wall), “Liman’ means Port in Turkish.

The owners are young professional chefs who are keen to show their talents by serving Turkish and Mediterranean dishes.

The Sucuk, a spicy Turkish sausage, grilled and incredibly tasty, was beautifully presented on salad leaves with a light dressing.

It consisted of mince lamb with tomatoes, green and red peppers, topped with cheese, on a slice of lightly grilled aubergine, served with a salad and a portion of fluffy turkish rice.

For dessert, we had Sutlac (Turkish rice pudding) and an enormous apple tart served with cream.

Mezze plates like the kizartma (fried aubergines, courgettes, onion, carrot, potatoes and peppers with yogurt) and the karides tava (tiger prawns sautéed in butter with garlic, mixed herbs and a special tomato sauce) are perfect for sharing around the table before moving on to some charcoal-grilled meat, some sublime seafood like the somon guvek (slow-cooked salmon with garlic, onion, peppers, tomatoes and mash potato layered on top), a hearty stew or a veggie dish like the vegetable moussaka.
