Giraffe, Belsize Park & Chalk Farm

Scene: one grumpy, mildly neurotic, anti-corporate bias reviewer is sent on assignment to a newly opened branch of the Giraffe chain.

Following a brief chat with our waiter we quickly learnt that the Belsize Park branch of Giraffe was only 4 days old during our visit.

Given the staggering amount of choice on the menu, we fancied entree recommendations and, after a brief to and fro about our culinary likes and dislikes, we settled on the Edamame beans and Japanese Tiger Prawns, accompanied by a bottle of Akacia Tree Red.

Without needing to refer to the CD player, the waiter explained that the CD - like all music played at Giraffe - was from the Putumayo World Music label and that if I were to Google Putumayo.com, I would get more information, which I indeed later did... and I suggest anyone wanting exposure to world music “guaranteed to make you feel good!”

Atmosphere wise, while this kind of joint might not be the place for a first date, the Belsize Park branch of Giraffe has all the makings of a place for frequently enjoyable visits.

Having survived 20 years of boom and bust in Liverpool Street, Moshi Moshi is the elder statesman on the Japanese restaurant scene in London.

2) It’s a slight mystery that the restaurant has lasted this long given their obscure location: hidden behind a whole array of shops at the back of Liverpool Street Station.

5) In fact, the restaurant is so stoutly traditional that you get dishes like prawn head crispies: great post-work fodder over a few bottles of Asahi.

Their ecological credentials are greener than green: took blue fin tuna off their menu in 1998; only use sustainable salmon from Loch Duart; and it was one of the first five restaurants in the UK to get MSC accreditation in 2007.

Here’s to the next 20 years of wonderful traditional food from Moshi Moshi....read more

Great: Easy evening out with friends and family in a chic retreat.

Usually, after a Christmas shopping evening, I am always in search of a nice hideaway: comfy, familiar, but chic, where I can relax.

Let’s go with a chicken based menu then, and how about a nice pint of Young’s to accompany it.

Again, I am lost in my thoughts; this time about eating birds: why do we eat turkey at Christmas?

We talk about how she will spend her Christmas: for a moment I envy her, a whole pub for herself during the holiday season.
