Traditional Neapolitan Pizza in Ealing London

Santa Maria Pizzeria • London – Traditional Neapolitan Pizza

Located in St.Mary’s Road, was natural to name our pizzeria Santa Maria.

Being Neapolitan (pizza was invented in Naples in 1889 from chef Raffaele Esposito, in honour of Queen Margherita, using tomato, mozzarella and basil to resemble the colours of the italian flag) and passionate about pizza, they thought that the borough of Ealing needed a traditional neapolitan pizzeria.

So, after working with their own hands on everything and importing the wood fired oven from Italy, Santa Maria Pizzeria finally opened its doors to the public on Valentine’s day 2010.

The pizza served in Santa Maria, is exactly the same as the pizza you can eat on the streets of Naples, using the same ingredients and adopting the same cooking method.

Santa Maria Pizzeria will be happy to feed everyone, from pennyless students to VIPs, with the authentic taste of Naples, according to the motto “Quality and quantity at honest prices”.

The owners of Santa Maria Pizzeria — Pasquale Chionchio and Angelo Ambrosio — have revealed to Eater the details of their third London location.

Santa Maria Pizzeria first opened in Ealing in west London in February 2010 — becoming a pilgrimage site for pizza lovers largely because of an avid commitment to authentic Neapolitan-style pizza.

Santa Maria owners, Pasquale Chionchio and Angelo Ambrosio The owners are known to eschew the idea, popularised by the likes of Franco Manca, of “sourdough” pizza.

Similarly, Chionchio told Eater London that “we wanted a location in central London and Fitzrovia is good for our product.

We hope to find another location in central London that is bigger,” before reiterating that they see a gap in the market: “There is no other independent pizzeria in central London,” he said.

From humble beginnings in the 'Queen of the Suburbs' to winning awards and accolades for their food, Santa Maria has taken a giant leap forward and opened a second restaurant to tempt the good folk of Chelsea with mouth-watering pizzas.

The Santa Maria story started back in 2010 when owners Pasquale Chionchio and Angelo Ambrosio opened a small restaurant with just 25 covers in a leafy street a short stroll from Ealing town centre.

The Ealing restaurant is now hailed as a local treasure and the owners, keen to expand their success story, last month opened a second Santa Maria, which sits on a corner of the busy King's Road bordering Chelsea and Fulham.

Fiona was just as impressed with her Santa Rose (£9.95) - a tomato-based sauce combining well with smoked mozzarella, salami and smoked aubergines, and the lightness of the dough with both pizzas was perfection.

It's easy to see why one publication voted Santa Maria's pizzas as the best in London and now it is not only the good people of Ealing but also fellow west Londoners across the river in Fulham and Chelsea who can sample these truly traditional delights.

Thankfully our city also offers gluttonous amounts of very good pizza indeed, from crisp and chewy crusts to superlative sourdough bases and tip-top toppings.

The N16 branch is less scruffy (and a little more expensive) than the Naples original, and the pizzas are slightly different, too – the bases are thicker for a start.
