The Sands End Fulham restaurant review by Shooting UK

It was a dry evening and so my dining companion and I had decided to walk the three miles from my home to The Sands End pub in Fulham.

I also like table service and menus (which is what The Sands End offers).

Game was in season and I opted for roast breast of pheasant, Roscoff onions and roast root vegetables, whilst my companion, as a nod to his Cumbrian roots, had slow roast Cumberland sausage.

Both were absolutely delicious, although the sausages weren’t as good as “my Cumbrian grandmother used to make”.

If you like your single malts, then The Sands End is going to be right up your street (or rather your loch) because it has a helpful blackboard with a map of the Highlands with the locations of all the distilleries and the ages of the whiskies on offer.

The Sands End pub in Fulham was your average local boozer, but you’d be wrong – it’s much more than that.

The head chef here is Oliver Marlowe who formerly worked at The Glasshouse & Chez Bruce, two very good restaurants – The Sands End is now also recommended by the Michelin Guide, a great triumph.

I had so much trouble deciding on what to spoil my sweet tooth with, and finally settled on a chocolate mousse with iced coffee, nougatine and a praline foam – yes it was as good as it sounds.

To sum it all up, The Sands End is a great pub.

ES Food Newsletter Princes William and Harry, who have been described as "devoted fans" of a new gastropub in Fulham called The Sands End, were not there last Wednesday evening when I went for dinner.

The low-built, two-storey Sands End, named after the locale near Wandsworth Bridge which in turn must once have had reference to the banks of the Thames, has a countrified air with scrubbed wooden tables, rows of bottled produce and floral café curtains at half-mast across the windows.

Manson and his partner Mark Dyer, a former equerry to HRH the Prince of Wales, have had the sense and good fortune to employ a well-travelled, energetic, imaginative, bread-baking chef with Irish antecedents in the shape of Liam Kirwan.

It does so particularly noticeably in the bar snacks, served all day, which include Irish black pudding with mushy peas, fried pig's ears with spiced plum and apple chutney, cruibini (grilled breadcrumbed pig's trotters) with Ballymaloe relish and a slice of hand-raised pork pie.

The slightly cakey wholemeal bread made by the chef, sold in the pub wrapped in greaseproof paper tied with twine and at Randalls the butchers on Wandsworth Bridge Road, was the ideal foil to the richness of the salad.
