Boisdale of Mayfair is a new bistro, shellfish bar and cigar terrace on North Row.

Surrounded by embassies and set in one of London’s most distinguished areas just off Park Lane, the new restaurant brings Boisdale’s celebrated traditional British cuisine and entertainment to a new area in the capital.

Set in a Grade One-listed building originally used as a stable, the restaurant is decorated in Boisdale’s distinctive red and green design, with the ground level Stable Bar offering draft ale, a superb wine list including its own bottled wine and vintage Champagnes, and Mayfair’s most exclusive whisky list of fine and rare malts, accompanied by nightly jazz and blues performances from the ‘Joanna’ piano.

Spread over two mezzanine levels, the dining room offers a full á la carte menu of British favourites, including dry aged Aberdeenshire beef, hand-dived Scottish king scallops served with venison chorizo and Boisdale claret, rock and native oysters, Scottish game and award-winning burgers.

Whilst smokers have been ushered out on to the street in most London establishments, smoking is a celebrated activity at Boisdale, with each restaurant having its own, discreet cigar terrace.

Haunt, Stoke Newington - Restaurant Review - Methods Unsound

Sitting on a nice little plot on the corner of Amhurst Road, which people in the know (a bloke at work) tell me used to be a French restaurant called Oui Monsieur, I can imagine Stoke Newington’s Haunt would be lovely in the summer with little tables on the pavement to watch the world go by… But on a chilly winter’s evening I frankly couldn’t wait to get inside.

It was a good slab of thickly sliced terrine with nice big chunks of meat and a few little salad leaves.

My one complaint would be that my piece of pork belly was mostly just a big lump of fat with only a little bit of pork on one side.

As a second main dish we also had the Hot Meat Platter to share which consisted of Jacob’s ladder with celeriac puree, veal croquettes with whole grain mustard mayonnaise, and saddle of rabbit with chicken mousse and a carrot puree.

It essentially just tasted like a good bit of beef but the sticky glaze was great, the celeriac puree flavour got a bit lost but nobody cared because the beef was so tasty, and the crispy things on the top were delicious.

The table was booked for 2pm and although we could see straight away that they were short staffed, it still took half an hour to seat us!

Throughout, there were issues with the service, for instance: - A friend waited at the bar for half an hour before not being served and giving up.

At the end of the meal we paid above the recommended service charge but when my mate popped back in to collect something he'd forgotten they asked for an extra £3!

But I was very unhappy being asked for such a small amount after the poor service and spending so much money on top of paying above the odds already.

It should also be noted that this £3 would've been from the optional service charge!

Arriving at exactly 7.30pm on a Friday night, my company and I were shown to our small, yet intimate table in the back section of Haunt.

We were promptly offered both food and drink menus but feeling quite dehydrated (and with a glass of wine on my mind) I didn’t even need to think twice when it came to ordering.

My prawn main ended up coming accompanied with focaccia bread instead of Turkish bread and I can’t say I was disappointed, it was seasoned to perfection.

For a Friday night, there was a nice little buzz about Haunt; it wasn't too busy but by no means was it quiet.

Three-courses and a glass of wine later, Haunt's cool vibe and tasty nosh certainly won a couple of new admirers after this visit.

It seems that Stoke Newington is where it's all happening at the moment - with news of opening after opening reaching us.

The latest quietly opened its doors a couple of weeks ago - Haunt on Stoke Newington Road.

It's an all-day restaurant, cafe and bar and the menu has some interesting sharing dishes: Plus we like the sound of "Veal croquettes with wholegrain mustard mayonnaise" and "Marinated King prawns with Turkish bread".

On top of the food and drink in the kitchen, the downstairs bar seats over 100 and will be the new place to go for DJ gigs - plus more pursuits including swing dancing, 35mm film nights, life drawing and yoga.

Haunt is open now at 182 Stoke Newington Road, London N16 7UY.

The Masque Haunt | Pubs In Old Street - J D Wetherspoon

In Elizabethan times, the nearby gatehouse of the former Priory of St John served as the office of the Master of the Revels, who was responsible for licensing plays, masques and other entertainment for the queen.

A masque was a lavish drama with music and dancing, written by the leading poets and playwrights of the day.
