Entrepreneur and vegan Chanel Delice is the founder of the bakery.

“It was an interesting thing, my niece was actually born two years ago with severe allergies so my sister begged me to make vegan cakes.

Although the name ‘Vegan Delice’ suits Chanel’s bakery very well, she would have chosen something different if not for her sister.

Even with the word ‘vegan’ in the name, some customers still ask Chanel once in a while if certain treats are vegan friendly or not.

With their secret egg free Frangipane recipe, which she says she cannot disclose “for security reasons”, Chanel loves that her customers enjoy the flavours of the vegan free treat.

Broadway Market will be getting a run for its money now that Broadway Vegan Market’s arrived on the scene.

It’s merely a sprawling vegan market and street food hub, complementing the area’s foodie heritage.

There’s also be sweet treats from Dough Society and Vegan Delice, while other stands offer goods to take away – including a vegan butcher courtesy of Big V London, where you can get your hands on some meat-free sausages, bacon and burgers to take home.

NOTE: Broadway Vegan Market runs every Saturday, 10-4pm, at London Fields Primary School.

The popularity of plant-based foodstuffs in the borough is not just a fashion – we look at the other factors playing a part in the success of the borough’s vegan outlets The popularity of Temple of Hackney, the UK’s first vegan “fried chicken” shop, made national news when it began trading in January – then called Temple of Seitan after the wheat gluten product it uses as a meat replacement.

“People will go out for, say, a Chinese, Italian or Ethiopian meal in Hackney, and now non-vegans are seeing vegan food as just another option,” says Sean O’Callaghan, who runs the popular Fat Gay Vegan blog and organises vegan events, including a food market and beer festival in the borough.

“That’s the secret of success for a vegan food business in Hackney – you’ve got to have a product that everybody wants, not just vegans.”

“What you’ll find overall in Hackney is that people who run vegan businesses care about more than animals,” says O’Callaghan of Fat Gay Vegan.

While Allplants and others have managed to get up and running successfully, some vegan food businesses find being in Hackney simply costs too much.
