Prospect of Whitby & “Hanging” Judge Jeffreys – LONDON ...

In the 17th century, it became a regular haunt of “Hanging” Judge Jeffreys during the reign of King James II.

Jeffreys’ historical notoriety comes from his actions in 1685 where he is believed to have executed up to 700 people in the Monmouth’s Rebellion, although historians now argue the factual accuracy of this.

A hangman’s noose on the riverfront (accessible by a side alley to the right of the pub) marks the local connection to “Hanging” Judge Jeffreys.

There are spectacular river views from the pub's two balconies and gardens, as well as from the great old windows, making the most of the river that meanders past here on its way to the sea.

Bare knuckle boxing matches and animal fights used to be held here in the bad old days, and little signs around the bar and eating area give you the pub's history.

A sign at the top of the stairs tells you that the pub is still haunted by various characters from its past, including the victim of a murder that took place here too a few centuries ago.

I visited The Prospect Of Whitby with my family on Friday night for dinner.

Eventually we got the managers attention and when my father asked him why it had taken 40 minutes for him to respond to our complaint.

The manager's reply was “I have 2 sick children upstairs and they are more important than any customer in this pub”.

My father's response was “I am sorry, I'm not familiar with your family situation but you have 5 really unsatisfied customers”.

My advice would be to visit Captain Kidd down the road or if you're in the area and you want really great food with exceptional service pop into Il Bordello on Wapping lane where you are guaranteed service with a beaming smile.

The Prospect of Whitby is a historic public house on the banks of the Thames at Wapping in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets.

[4] Following a fire in the early 19th century, the tavern was rebuilt and renamed The Prospect of Whitby, after a Tyne collier that used to berth next to the pub.

The pub also appears in Whitechapel, Series 4, Episode 4, where the body of a victim is discovered on the Thames shoreline.

A photograph of the Malcolm Price Trio was taken inside the pub and featured on the front cover of their second LP, titled 'Way Down Town', in 1965.

In a May 2016 episode of BBC's EastEnders, the pub is mentioned during a scene featuring Barbara Windsor and Steve McFadden when their character's Peggy and Phil Mitchell take a river cruise along the Thames.

Historic pub that claims to be haunted by celebrity ghosts.

If you've ever taken a boat up the Thames, you'll have probably noticed a scaffold and hangman's noose outside an appealingly aged tavern by the Wapping riverside.

It’s a grim reminder of Execution Dock, a nearby gallows where many a pirate met his end (yes, really).

And the tavern in question is the Prospect of Whitby, London’s oldest riverside pub and the best of three by the river in Wapping.

The neighbouring old warehouses might have been converted into luxury flats, but the pub still feels like the shadowy haunt of weatherbeaten sailors, smugglers and pirates, all just a few gulps of rum and a fist fight away from their next voyage.
