Halal Gems › 5 restaurants you must visit in 2017

Here’s our pick of five of our favourite restaurants which you must check out in 2017: Chit Chaat Chai is an Indian Street Eats restaurant run by Tania Rahman whose journey started with trading at food markets across London.

We’ve seen a number of restaurants pop up with the concept of sharing plates being a hit in the city (see Talli Joe, Darbaar, Kurobuta, Oliver Maki) and there is little doubt that Chit Chaat Chai will be a hit too.

While Stax has an impressive menu and offering given its tiny space, Boondocks (its newly opened sister restaurant in Old Street) has a much larger kitchen and site.

We hosted a movie night catered by Chef Bea Vo as part of our halal dining club so trust us when we say that you’re going to want to book a ticket even if it’s just for the food!

Inspired by the banquets of the Indian Royal Court, Darbaar boasts a 220 cover restaurant with an open kitchen, private dining room and chef’s table which makes it perfect for parties, events and intimate dinners.

And the name 'redemption' in pink neon lights looked quite cool.

The only thing I didn't like as much was the lack of space, I felt a bit crammed in and the absence of alcohol didn't help with that.

We had Bombay love (Tumeric root, coconut keffir, carrot, lemon and ginger juice) and Green is the new black (smoothie of baby spinach, avocado, cucumber, lime, ginger, maple water and pineapple).

I can't remember the name of my main dish I had, but it was made with grilled veggies and green beans.

My date's dish was the wild mushroom black rice risotto which was really delicious.

Redemption Bar, London’s only vegan, sugar-free, wheat-free and alcohol-free restaurant.

Starting out as a pop-up, Redemption launched its first venue in Notting Hill in 2015, with a second site opening six months later in Shoreditch.

With an ethos firmly rooted in caring for the planet, Redemption Bar’s nutritious yet sumptuous menu delights even the most sceptical meat lovers.

Their mantra ‘spoil yourself without spoiling yourself’ allows diners to redeem their overindulgences with delicious vegan, wheat-free eats and sugar-free raw desserts without feeling like a sacrifice.

Its glowy angel mural provides an Instagram opportunity before you even get inside; the cocktails are showy enough for any digital feed (they’re alcohol-free, by the way); and, of course, there’s free wi-fi for tweeting through your visit.

Which isn’t to say the food is purely about aesthetics – some dishes tasted great.

Other dishes held their own: the veg and quinoa sushi was nutty and had a nice crunch, although a dose of wasabi wouldn’t have gone amiss, and the black rice risotto was substantial and nicely vinegary.

But there were dishes spoiled by their apparent need to be photographed.

But hey, if your Instagram feed is hungrier than your belly, you’ll probably be pretty happy eating here.
