The Lowdown Restaurant Name: Sông Quê Café Cuisine: Vietnamese Average Price per Person: £8 to 20 GBP or $14 to $34 USD Location: London, England (please refer to the map below for details) Recommendations: Any of the pho dishes, Bun Bo Hue, Grilled Beef Wrapped in Betel Leaf, and Mixed Crunchy Salad with Prawn Ratings (out of 5) Taste: 4 Creativity/Authenticity: 4.5 Atmosphere: 3.5 Service: 3 Bang for Buck: 4 I’m phokin’ obsessed with pho.

A few friends of ours suggested hitting up Sông Quê Café on Kingsland Road which has won foodie awards proclaiming the restaurant as London’s finest Vietnamese cuisine and authentic pho as well as best cheap delicious eats.

The menu is comprehensive with all the usual Vietnamese suspects including spring rolls, salad rolls, banh xeo, pho, vermicelli, shaken beef, ice coffee and more.

This salad had an abundance of textures, colors and flavors with a combination of crunchy julienned vegetables, moist tender shrimp and crispy fried prawn crackers.

Pho aside, grilled beef wrapped in betel leaves aka bò nướng lá lốt, is one of my favorite Vietnamese dishes.

Having spent a couple of weeks in Vietnam sampling the most scrumptious food made me realise how good Sông Quê Café is.

We started with Fresh Rice Paper Rolls with Prawns and Herbs, Prawn Paste with Sugar Cane, Grilled Beef Wrapped in Betel Leaf, and Spicy Soft Shell Crab.

I love the fresh rolls from Sông Quê, they are fresh and herby with just the right amount of rice vermicelli.

I have tried to recreate this dish numerous times at home with varying degrees of success, but could never get anywhere near Sông Quê’s.

For mains, we had Traditional Crispy Pancake with Prawn and Chicken served with Salad and Herbs, Green Papaya Salad with Prawn and Pork, Stir Fried Beef with Lemongrass Bun and Spring Roll Grilled Pork Bun.

Beautifully presented classic and contemporary dishes on the short menu may include pork and prawn summer rolls, slow-cooked beef pho, barbecue lemongrass pork noodle salad, barbecued lamb chops, and the highly popular prawn toasts – don’t miss these if they’re on the menu.

Owned by Vietnamese Kitchen, the company behind Cây Tre and other Vietnamese restaurants in central and east London, this acclaimed Shoreditch venue is an ideal place to try the country’s street food.

Choose from dishes such as monkfish fillet with turmeric rice noodles, Vietnamese herbs and sesame crackers; or, if you’re dining with friends, a unique multi-course feast based on meat, game or seafood (available with 48 hours notice).

Most of the capital’s Vietnamese restaurants boast about their street food credentials – but this small, down-to-earth, family-run venue focuses firmly on home cooking.

There are lots of attractive little dishes to share on its contemporary menu, including 'Vietnamese scotch eggs', Hanoi spiced volcano rolls, and wild mushroom and vermicelli bowl.

The main dishes of classic pho and bun bo are delicious, but we recommend loading up on small plates and sharing the lot, the better way to try all the incredible flavours on offer.

The third branch from Vietnamese culinary legend, Bobby Chinn, The House of Ho’s sister restaurants can be found in Saigon and Hanoi.

The flavors are authentically Vietnamese, but the dishes have a decided modern update, with beautiful spiced quail, apple-smoked pork belly, and rich, fragrant steamed lobster with glass noodles all on the menu.

The focus is on sharing plates, but this summer sees bahn mi and pho also come to Ho.
