The Blue’s Kitchen have been on the restaurant scene for a while but I went down to Shoreditch to check out their Monday night Rib Night for myself.

The original Blue’s Kitchen opened in Camden in 2009 and after a good few years of delighting locals with barbecue and cocktails they opened their Shoreditch branch in 2014, with another venue in Brixton following in 2015.

Then a few weeks ago The Blue’s Kitchen crept back into my life once more when their Monday night Rib Night made an appearance in my London food news roundup.

This was actually the reason for our visit, Rib Night takes place at The Blue’s Kitchen every Monday from 4pm onwards.

Newbies like Red’s True Barbecue may have opened up down the road and probably get a ton of publicity with their donut burger and all their talk about ‘True Believers’ but The Blues Kitchen has been open for a long time and there is a reason why.

drinks

This lively, contemporary bar-diner on the main Camden drag celebrates American musical heritage in song (live shows, DJs, free harmonica lessons), spirits and sustenance.

The food is all-American in spirit and substance, with barbecue and burgers featuring prominently.

There are around 50 bourbons in a variety of categories, some used as bases for cocktails.

‘America’s native spirit’ is how Kentucky bourbon is described, with Ancient Age and Evan Williams typical examples; Tennessee, ‘the first cousin of Kentucky’, is honoured with a full suit of Jack Daniel’s labels.

food

This Curtain Road venue is close in style and sentiment to its big sister, The Blues Kitchen over in Camden.

Expect, then, a restaurant, bar and music venue with a hefty Stateside influence - from its bourbon and its barbecues all the way to its blues.

Music does have a big part to play here.

There's live artists pretty much every night of the week, with everything from rock 'n' roll to swing, motown, roots and even gospel complementing all that smokey blues.

Keep an eye out for nights where food and music combine in happy harmony - think bargain ribs gnawed to a soundtrack of soul.
