Cay Tre Soho restaurant review: Vietnamese eatery stays loyal to its ...

The plastic bottles of chilli and soya sauce on the tables are the same as you would find in a pho street stall - but the food is even better.

It arrived in a sizzling pot, the bold, sweet, dark sauce perfectly complementing the melt-in-the-mouth fish steaks.

The tonkin jasmine flower, stir fried with black pepper that was recommended as a side dish (£8) was fresh, salty and crunchy.

Soho's finest ice-cream shop, Gelupo, makes unique flavours especially for Cay Tre including Vietnamese basil and coriander.

Coriander ice cream and stir-fried jasmin flowers might not be available on every street corner in Vietnam - but we're very grateful to be able to find them in Soho.

New Restaurant Review: Cay Tre Soho | Londonist

Owning two of East London's most popular Vietnamese restaurants (Cay Tre on Old Street and Viet Grill on Kingsland Road) along with the newly opened Kêu Banh Mi Deli (also on Old Street, across the street from Cay Tre actually – read our review here) is apparently not enough for entrepreneur Hieu Bui who's recently launched a Soho version of Cay Tre.

If you like the Old Street Cay Tre, we reckon you'll approve of this new Dean Street version.

And if you love Vietnamese food but for whatever reason found Old Street's ambience or menu lacking, it might be worth your while to check out this new and more centrally located Cay Tre.

And our main course, oh our main course, of Lang Son spinning roast Tamworth pork belly (stuffed with sweet curry leaves from northern Vietnam's Lang Son province, roasted with lemon and honey then served with dried shrimp chilli oil, £10) was one of the more delicious and intriguing pork dishes we've sampled in a very long time.

Both starter and main were fiery yet held delicate flavours.

food   menu

The presentation of the menu would make a graphic designer proud, whilst its contents offer some of the most creative Vietnamese dishes in the capital.

Unlike many Vietnamese restaurants, Cay Tre has an excellent list of suppliers so all dishes are made from fresh and quality ingredients which shine through in the colourful creations full of exotic flavours and tastes.

The drinks list is impressive and wines by the glass are helpfully matched up with specific flavours from the menu so keep the list to yourself and wisely inform your date that peach and citrus of the Sauvignon Blanc will work brilliantly with the Papaya and Beef Salad.

Start with La Vong Grilled fish which is cooked at your table and served on a bed of rice noodles.

Portions are generous here so either share a selection of starters or make sure you save room for mains – the Phos (Vietnamese noodle soup) are a good lighter option and the side of Vietnamese fried rice comes with a duck egg and brown shrimps.

food

Cây Tre’s longstanding popularity is partly thanks to its location: easier to stumble upon for the non-local than nearby Kingsland Road’s Vietnamese cluster.

But a beef ‘carpaccio’ couldn’t have tasted more Vietnamese: just-so tangy, and alive with diverse herbs and chillies (albeit served tepid).

Its flesh was pleasingly robust, contrasting with the soft, granular ‘marinade’ of galangal and lemongrass.

The view out of the window (a solicitor’s and a stationer’s) will hardly distract from Cây Tre’s enduringly good eating.

Cây Tre's Soho branch is a bit more glamorous: a small fortune has been spent on the interior design, to good effect: it looks modern, spacious, airy.
