Sustainability-Focused Restaurant Claw Will Open in Carnaby This ...

The seafood-focused street food business, Claw, have found a permanent site in Soho’s Carnaby — the restaurant is scheduled to open this October.

Fabian Clark, the business’s owner, founded Claw two years ago after he discovered that Britain exports approximately 80% of its crab to the rest of Europe and Asia “rather than enjoying the bountiful benefits of our large coastline here at home.”

When it does, in the new year, dishes will include: bacon and scallop muffin; herb and mustard potato hash; and chilli scrambled eggs with crab and samphire.

[Update 13 November] New dishes announced include: Crab beignets with crab mayonnaise; fried chicken and caviar; squid bolognese ‘Sloppy Joe’; onglet, smoked sweet potato and gremolata (to share); roast cauliflower with spelt and tofu yoghurt; and toasted milk parfait, sour toffee and gingersnap.

The team has also plan to include “cult” signatures to takeaway — the Claw crab roll; bacon and scallop muffin; and Claw’s lobster roll.

The menu is split into sections; crab, seafood, land, plant and sweet.

We stuck with the speciality, ordering the crab mac and cheese, crab beignets, crab fries and a couple of cooked oysters and trout poke from the seafood section.

The crab beignets were the standout dish; fresh from the fryer, these hot donut-style fritters were filled with crab and came with a crab mayo for dipping.

We can imagine ourselves stopping by for a bowl of beignets and a samphire G&T or Seaside Negroni whenever we’re swanning around Soho.

Crab mac and cheese with London raclette and hollandaise was suitably creamy whilst the poke trout made us feel a little bit better about our indulgence, so light it was positively healthy.

Crabs.

More specifically, the kind you really want are the ones that have been sustainably and responsibly sourced from Start Bay in Devon, directly from the fishermen, by the folks at crustaceous eatery CLAW.

Founder Fabian Clark was awarded the 2015 Virgin Foodpreneur Award – as illustrious as it is awkward to pronounce – and their street food has previously popped up in all kinds of places, from Soho’s 13 Cantons to Broadgate Square’s micro gastro village.

NOTE: CLAW are due to open their permanent branch on 12th January, with a soft launch (30% off food) running 8th-11th January.

Claw is a new seafood restaurant opening in London's Carnaby area.

Inspired by the produce available along Britain's coastlines, the restaurant will plate up seasonal dishes, all made using only the freshest ingredients.

The entire concept has been thought up by Fabian Clark, who began the Claw project in order to showcase how we as Britons can enjoy fresh seafood dishes from our coastline without paying dizzying prices.

And nowhere is that rule more appropriate than with the city's seafood restaurants.

Owner Fabian Clark was hell-bent on creating a venue that both served great dishes and supported Britain's fishing communities at the same time.

In a nutshell: Crab and a lot more in Carnaby Summing it all up: They've been popping up around town for the past few years, but now shellfish specialists Claw have found their own spot.

Expect lots of crab and plenty of surf and turf options too... They've been popping up all over town in the past few years and now Claw are about to open their own permanent restaurant in Carnaby.

As you might expect from the name, crab is most definitely on the menu at Claw.

The man behind Claw, Fabian Clark, gets his seafood directly from fishermen for the best produce - and that also helps to keep the costs down.

As for what's on that menu: All of that sounds pretty much like everything we want to eat and we do like the surf and pork options... Where is it?

The eponymous claws are ready and waiting for a good cracking, but the meat gets a few twists along the way too.

A steaming helping of crab mac and cheese is noticeably generous – oodles of raclette cheese are treated to a splash of IPA for a beer-battered smack over the clean crab meat.

These come as part of a sharing menu, which is sliced five ways (lines are drawn between Crab, Land, Sea, Plant and Sweet).

A dish of octopus with Mediterranean tomatoes and fennel has nothing to do with mac and cheese, but the buttery soft meat with rich, elegant additions is a winner.

Bucking that trend, however, was a very lovely toasted milk parfait with gingersnap and sour toffee – silky and slick, with an enjoyably homely flavour.
