My jaw dropped when I saw the size of the Eat Tokyo Soho katsu curry of my neighbour.

£9 gets you an insanely large bowl with surely what must be a kilo of rice, curry and what, five individual breasts of chicken?

Eat Tokyo is a super popular cheap Japanese eatery that’s all across London.

Chicken quality feels just okay, and the pickles and salad are the usual standard fare.

There’s eight branches of Eat Tokyo around London and they’ve been going for a good while.

I find that Japanese food outside Japan tend to be expensive so over the years, I have always been on the lookout for good Japanese restaurants that are affordable.

The menu is not extensive but they serve the usual Japanese fare most people would be familiar with — sushi, maki (rolls), yakisoba, and katsu curry.

I came across Pham Sushi  while buying lunch at Whitecross Market.

Along with the sushi set, we also ordered a salmon bento and prawn tempura roll.

The restaurant on Whitecross Street is small with an estimated capacity of around 30-35 people.

I booked a table to jump the queue, walked in (ignoring dagger looks from people who’ve been waiting for yonks), only to be told to wait out (ignoring smug looks from people who’ve been waiting for yonks).

After a few minutes, we were told our table was ready so we walked in once again with smug looks on our faces, ignoring evil eyes from people who’ve been waiting for yonks.

Our boat included three cuts of tuna (normal, chutoro and o-toro), salmon and yellow tail.

Unfortunately (or fortunately) I dropped the o-toro (fatty) on the table and refused to enforce the 3-second rule but my dates said wasn’t too good.

The salmon and the yellow tail were just average.

Cheap, fast, fuss-free Japanese cuisine in the heart of London.

The menu at Eat Tokyo is always mammoth, but I ended up wanting to get the bento box again.

Which is a nice relief in a town like London where everything always looks overrun on a busy night.

First introduced to me by my good friend Craig, it’s a little gadget-like arcade with machines that do very cool things.

So I’d very likely return to another Eat Tokyo but maybe just a bit more way.

Eat Tokyo Soho | Restaurants in Soho, London

This Soho branch is the fifth London venue from the chain of Japanese restaurants.

Here, lunchtime sushi sets do brisk business with local workers.

Elsewhere on the menu it's well-known Japanese staples.

Expect, then, dishes such as sashimi, sushi, bento boxes, donburi, tuna teriyaki, katsu curry, black cod, seared mackerel and deep-fried soft-shell crab in tempura, served with a spicy Japanese mayo.
