A veggie food connoisseur in London: Mildreds, Lexington Street, W1

My friend L, and I have therefore been pretty religious about our weekend 5 mile walk with an incentive at the end; the incentive being a small but lovely meal at a vegetarian restaurant in the vicinity of the walk.

L's main - a mushroom and ale pie came with a small helping of super-dooper chips.

The custard served alongside was a bit runny but the pud itself was absolutely yummmmmmy although I didn't care too much for the lashings of chopped sweetened ginger on top (L adored the ginger).

The ambience was pleasant and functional, service was very efficient (although some of the waiting staff appeared a bit stressed), the toilets were impeccably clean and most importantly the food was well-cooked, excellent quality and promptly served.

The only time we waited longer than expected was for the custard accompanying the pudding and even then it was only because we requested it a bit late.

The first time I went (one evening a few years ago), I went for option a and I’ve got to say, this wasn’t such a pleasant experience.

However, the second time I went (lunchtime/mid-afternoon, a few years ago but not as many years as ago as the first time), friendly staff showed us immediately to a table and although, again, I can’t remember what I ate, I remember enjoying it and happy to make a return visit.

Mildreds: The Cookbook is set out in chapters and sub-chapters containing: with each recipe clearly labelled if it’s suitable for vegans and/or gluten-free.

The first recipe I made from the cookbook was a gorgeous feta, chilli & mint-filled aubergine escalope.

I usually make spanakopita in one large strudel or in pie-form (you can see others I’ve made here and here) but this time, I put a bit more effort in and made individual ones.

#139 Hustle and bustle in Soho. Dinner at Mildreds, London – The ...

Restaurant review #139 – Mildreds is a vegetarian restaurant in London, and has four locations: Soho, Camden, Kings Cross and Dalston.

But we had no other dinner plans for that first evening in London, and the restaurant was not too far from out hotel, so we headed there early hoping to get a spot.

We shared the meringue tart (£6,5): The food was nice, and all in all – considering it’s city center London!

Staf was really rushing back and forth to the tables, and with everything placed so closely next to each other in the restaurant, that also meant an annoying bump to my chair every now and then.

Perhaps the other locations of Mildreds are more relaxed, maybe we’ll explore those on a next trip to London!

Initially, I think I tried to order some bread and oil but they were completely out of bread, apart from the ones for soup and burgers, so we had to have a quick rethink and instead decided to try the gyoza dumplings with sweet chilli sauce between us.

But he tried the Sri Lankan sweet potato curry (served with roasted lime cashews, pea basmati rice and coconut tomato samba).

I went for the most recommended items on the menu: a Polish burger, with Vegan cheese, and a side of sweet potato fries.

For dessert, we really wanted to try the most recommended item on the dessert menu – chocolate peanut butter brownie with chocolate sauce and vanilla ice cream, but the idea of eating any more food was just not even possible.

Partly, this is because Mildreds was the first time we’d managed to go out for a really good Vegan meal so they relief that such place existed was very much fresh in my mind!

After hearing some positive reviews from friends, we were both eagerly anticipating the first plates of food and the dishes were cooked to perfection – the gyoza dumplings were particularly tasty and our favourite dish of the night, whilst the organic salad was simple and refreshing.

For our main course we decided to share two dishes and went for the Sri Lankan sweet potato curry and the beetroot burger, again on the waiter’s recommendation.

Despite the waiter’s enthusiasm for the puddings, neither of us could squeeze any more food into our mouths.

The food is delicious and the relaxed buzz of table talk ringing through the restaurant gives the ambience an energetic and jovial feel.

So much care and effort goes into all aspects of the experience, from the service to the food itself, which makes Mildred’s one of the best vegetarian restaurants in London and I’ll definitely be returning soon.

Here are my top five places to grab a healthy meal at, all of which cater well for vegetarians and vegans too.

The Soho branch is like a healthy little cubby hole, with people often queuing out the door for the filling and delicious vegetarian food.

The Gate is one such success story; a family-run vegetarian restaurant, it has grown to three locations now, my favourite being their newly-opened one at Seymour Place.

Seymour Place is a good place to go for a romantic evening, while their Islington restaurant is more family-friendly.

Just across the road from The Gate’s third restaurant is The Mae Deli, which offers equally good healthy food but in a completely different setting.
