A childhood favourite that has endured the test of time, there are few dishes more comforting than the trusty fish finger sandwich.

Whether you're a ketchup convert or tied to tartare, this crispy, flaky affair is being produced in style at Poppie's Fish and Chips.

The renowned chippy, in operation since 1952, is a masterclass in British fish'n'chips and we couldn't resist paying their Soho branch a visit for one of their superior fish finger sandwiches.

Two fish and chip stories in as many days?

Following hard on the heels of yesterday's story about new Notting Hill opening The Chipping Forecast comes news that Poppie's Fish and Chips is opening in Soho.

Owner 74-year-old Pat ‘Pop’ Newland sounds pretty chipper (sorry) about the idea of moving into central London, explaining that it's a bit of a return for him as he had a jellied eel stall on Rupert Street in the 60s.

As for food, the usual cod or haddock will be on offer, as well as battered or classic sausages, fishcakes, saveloy, jellied eels, bottled wine and beer, and of course their chips.

Poppie's Fish and Chips will open in June 2016 at 55-59 Old Compton Street, London W1T 1DB.

A Soho branch of the iconic East End fish and chip shop.

Pitching up outside the Old Compton Street branch of Poppie’s you get the feeling you’ve stepped into a hipster-friendly time-warp.

The East London fish and chip institution has opened in Soho, but while the fun ’50s vibe remains intact – complete with union jack bunting and a red chopper bike chained to the front – the food isn't what it once was.

Poppie’s has built a cult following around being a top quality chippie, but while my ‘regular’ cod looked the part – all flaking white fish in golden brown casing – the batter was on the oily side and the huge pile of chips a tad anaemic.

Poppie’s has buckets of East End nostalgia, but can be a bit of a wobbly ride.
