It’s funny that I’ve now been blogging for over two years and I haven’t yet featured one of my favourite go-to places to eat in London – Poppie’s Fish and Chips.

So at the start I spent a lot of my time searching online for the best places local to me and one of the answers was Poppie’s Fish and Chips.

But it’s not just us that love it, in 2014 Poppie’s won the Best Independent Fish and Chip Restaurant of the Year Award at the National Fish and Chip awards!

Although it sells proper British fish and chips (and battered sausages, pies etc) it’s decked out like an American 1950s style diner with a jukebox in the corner and photos and memorabilia lining the walls and the staff in themed uniforms.

My local Poppie’s is the original restaurant on Hanbury Street (just off Brick Lane) but they also have a takeaway only station in Old Spitalfields Market and a second branch in Camden, so you can take your pick about where you want to get your fish and chips fix.

M@ The Fish Chips Detective: Poppies Of exits his shop to inspect a strange man holding up some Where's the best fish and chip shop in London?

Our Fish Chips Detective tours the capital's chippies armed with an experienced palate...and a trusty weighing balance to discover who gives the best portions.

To help the comparison, we're going to focus on just one meal: haddock (the king of takeaway fish), chips and mushy peas.

This new venture inhabits a curious space somewhere between trendy and traditional, with an eggshell blue interior and glazed tiles.

A remarkable consistency between our two visits, with both fish and peas weighing-in identically, and chips only 5g out.

Two fish and chip stories in as many days?

Following hard on the heels of yesterday's story about new Notting Hill opening The Chipping Forecast comes news that Poppie's Fish and Chips is opening in Soho.

Owner 74-year-old Pat ‘Pop’ Newland sounds pretty chipper (sorry) about the idea of moving into central London, explaining that it's a bit of a return for him as he had a jellied eel stall on Rupert Street in the 60s.

As for food, the usual cod or haddock will be on offer, as well as battered or classic sausages, fishcakes, saveloy, jellied eels, bottled wine and beer, and of course their chips.

Poppie's Fish and Chips will open in June 2016 at 55-59 Old Compton Street, London W1T 1DB.

Nostalgia rules the roost at this quality chippy, which comes complete with jukebox, jellied eels and newspaper-wrapped chips.

Poppies’ pick and mix assortment of shiny British kitsch – including a jukebox, mini red telephone box and a monochrome photo of heart-throb Cliff Richard – makes it look like a simulation of a fish and chip shop.

The Billingsgate-sourced fish is so fresh that diners are offered the option of having it grilled as well as fried.

Lemon sole was simple, crisply battered and matched well with Meantime London ale, while chips were irresistible.

It’s spawned a second branch in Camden: not suprising, since this is as good as fish and chips gets.

A Soho branch of the iconic East End fish and chip shop.

Pitching up outside the Old Compton Street branch of Poppie’s you get the feeling you’ve stepped into a hipster-friendly time-warp.

The East London fish and chip institution has opened in Soho, but while the fun ’50s vibe remains intact – complete with union jack bunting and a red chopper bike chained to the front – the food isn't what it once was.

Poppie’s has built a cult following around being a top quality chippie, but while my ‘regular’ cod looked the part – all flaking white fish in golden brown casing – the batter was on the oily side and the huge pile of chips a tad anaemic.

Poppie’s has buckets of East End nostalgia, but can be a bit of a wobbly ride.

Poppies' owner, Pop Newland, has been serving fish and chips in the East End all his life.

The menu includes mouth-watering fresh fish cooked in crunchy batter, served with golden chips and classic mushy peas.

Poppies only buy fish of the finest quality which is prepared on the premises by their onsite fishmonger.

Experience a nostalgic slice of London with a meal at this traditional fish and chip shop in Camden.

The restaurant’s retro vibe is produced using authentic 40s/50s light fittings and furnishings.

The locally-sourced fish served at the restaurant is delivered fresh every day and includes favourites such as Peterhead cod, haddock, plaice, rock, sole, mackerel, halibut, and skate.
