Keith’s second choice was the signature dish of Shoryu Ganso Tonkotsu £11, a light broth of pork bones, collagen, fat, marrow that are boiled for 12 hours to create a creamy texture.

Tonkotsu is a very gentle dish, the kind of food you crave when poorly and need a hug in a bowl, which suited Ade when we went to the another ramen restaurant, Tonkotsu up the road.

Shishito £7 – deep-fried padron peppers with Hakata yuzu and sea salt were good to nibble in between everything else but Keith seemed perplexed by them, preferring them the Spanish way.

Keith consulted the waitress in his decision making and had a combination of Matcha and sesame ice cream £6.50, my turn to suffer food envy, this was not your usual sweet ice cream, it was so very savory which got us onto talking about avocado ice cream for which I am trying to track down in a London restaurant.

The open ramen kitchen is the place to be at Shoryu, make sure you try to grab a seat at the counter to watch the chefs at work.

Yuu Kitchen: South Asian Fusion Restaurant in Aldgate

food

It’s a fusion-style restaurant bringing South East Asian and Pacific Rim flavours to the table.

I recommend taking a perch at the open kitchen bar to see the action unfold as the chefs create dishes crafted by Aussie duo Stephen Lowe previously of Icebar and Jon de Villa previously of Nobu.

The crab bao is under seasoned and Scallop, Prawn and Chive Dumplings, over.

BBQ’d Octopus, mouth-wateringly good, soft sweet meat with a delicious outer char from the Big Green Egg.

Yuu Kitchen serves dynamic and vibrant food in a cool and funky setting perfect for casual dining.

food

And at Shoryu – one of London’s more ubiquitous ramen chains – it is good.

The menu is extensive: as well as a host of tonkotsu variations (that is, ramen with a fatty, collagen-laced pork bone broth), there are crowd-pleasing sundries like shellfish tempura, karage fried chicken, steamed shoryu buns (big fat bao, basically), even sashimi and sushi – plus trends-in-waiting like takoyaki octopus balls (we’re seeing them everywhere, honest!)

The kotteri hakata tonkotsu, a sort of mildly pimped version of the house ramen, came with a heavier pork bone broth and a double helping (score!)

A bowl of karaka tan tan – a ramen with white-miso-spiced minced pig in place of the slices – was equally good, and fiery as hell.

It was all tempered slightly by a decent shoryu pork bun, slicked with Japanese mayo (like a mayo/salad cream mix) and washed down with a teeny bottle of hatakosen ramune soda – a bubblegum-flavoured soft drink that’s nostalgic catnip for Japanese folks, and plain delicious for me.
