Vasco & Piero's Pavilion Italian Restaurant

Vasco & Piero's Pavilion Italian Restaurant

Vasco & Piero's Pavilion is a traditional Italian restaurant, creating beautiful Umbrian cuisine from central Italy using only simple fresh ingredients

Vasco & Piero's - Italian Restaurant, Soho London

We are a traditional Italian restaurant, which moves along with the times and is loved by the local community.

We are not here to wow, just serve good Italian food based on our Umbrian heritage.

We change the menu twice a day, and it always includes a few of our home made pasta dishes.

In general, there are no time limits on tables.

We have paintings from Giampaolo Tomassetti, an artist from Umbria and we present guest artists from time to time.

The two page wine list ranged in price from £17.50 to £135.

Although a simple dish, this was very enjoyable, the avocado ripe, the dressing carefully balanced (14/20).

Spaghettini with prawns (£10.50) featured accurately cooked prawns, pasta with good texture and a garlic sauce with a hint of chilli pepper (14/20).

I continued with home-made tagliatelle with Umbrian beef ragu (£10.50), the pasta excellent, the ragu enjoyably rich (easily 14/20).

Tiramisu (£7.50) was pleasant but lacked the intense coffee flavour of the best versions of this Italian classic (13/20).

In 1989, The Pavilion moved to the current premises at 15 Poland Street Some of our chairs were created by Angus Macbean in 1954 & we still have the pineapples.

We try to blend tradition with modern Umbria Vasco and Piero created the restaurant out of a passion for good, uncomplicated food.

Vasco was born in Umbria and as a result of this many foods are sourced direct from farmers in this region.

Particular favourites are truffles, wild mushrooms, seasoned cheeses and cured meats such as lombetto and capocollo.

Pondering restaurant longevity, what causes it, what makes a place outlive its neighbours, I head for a Soho old-timer, the pushing-50 Vasco & Piero’s.

Umbrian touches come via hearty use of chickpeas and pulses: fine, rosy-centred seared tuna on a bed of lentils, bathed randomly and successfully with soy and ginger.

Pasta is made in-house daily: tagliatelle, yolk-yellow and dressed with a judicious amount of rich, vinous, slow-cooked beef and pork ragú; daringly al dente orecchiette, the chewy little ears laden with a forest’s-worth of wild mushrooms and just a lick of cream to pull the whole dish together.

Umbrian truffles feature in season: I love the posh-prole play of floury borlotti beans under a fat, rough Tuscan sausage stuffed with pecorino, wrapped in pancetta and roasted before being anointed with black truffle butter.

Service: a neatly judged array of smooth operators dedicated to your pleasure and mild flirtation, the odd daft boy for levity and an elderly chap who I think is the titular Vasco Matteucci, metaphorically cuffing them all across the ears.

This Soho stalwart has served up unfussy Umbrian dishes since 1971 (and in this location since 1989).

Much of the produce here is sourced direct from small Umbrian farms, alongside seasonal white and black truffles from the region's hills.

The menu changes twice daily, but diners can expect dishes such as tagliatelle with traditional Umbrian ragu or grilled fillet of swordfish with rosemary, chilli and cannellini beans.

Umbrian meats and cheeses also feature.
