Some of the friendliest staff we’ve encountered in London dispel any notions that this wine bar might be stuffy about its commitment to the grape.

That doesn’t mean it’s not serious: it offers 25 wines by the glass, 300 by the bottle, all available to take away...even without the fabulous wines, it would still be a great restaurant.

Dishes such as mussels, clams and john dory with chorizo, or barnsley chop with greens, are excellent combinations of light, bright flavours – and go perfectly with the recommended wines.

GO London Newsletter The buzz: the third branch of these snazzy wine bars lands in Soho with more than 300 wines on the list and delicious pan-European food on the menu.

The deal: a wonderfully bustling bar/shop — all exposed brick, vintage posters and chalkboards — where the waiters know and love their wine.

They even bottle several of their wines on site making many options very cheap.

By the way: you can’t book tables at the downstairs bar.

From my numerous pithy remarks on the subject of awful kids in restaurants, it must be tempting for the reader to think I’m some sort of Fenella the Kettle Witch character who wants London’s children baked into a pie.

my nine-year-old niece Lola asked last month as we perused the menu at what my post-trauma therapist would confirm was a Hungry Horse family pub.

Notably, Vinoteca’s very brief kids menu treats little people like foodies instead of philistines: at £6 per plate there is casareccia pasta with pesto, grilled Cornish mackerel with quinoa or bavette steak with chips and watercress.

The bavette is on the main menu, too, with added steak butter and horseradish, with my crowd insisting it to be one of the best in London.

Kids puddings are ice cream, Bakewell tart or Eton Mess.

Vinoteca Soho Review: What We Thought

What: Loosely translated from Spanish as ‘wine cellar/bar’, Vinoteca is inspired by the characterful wine bars of Spain and Italy and boasts a vast list of 200 wines (25 by the glass) from 20 countries.

Wine is also available to purchase to take home but an inviting atmosphere and daily changing food menu makes you want to stay.

Vinoteca opened in Farringdon back in 2005 and have since opened wine bars in Marylebone, Soho, Chiswick and King’s Cross.

The food is designed to compliment the wines and the menu has new dishes added daily, with a strong focus on seasonality, and recommended glasses to accompany each dish.

What We Ate: The food menu was concise and seriously appealing – when we walked in the room smelt of mussels so they were an easy choice, swimming in the bowl with a few cockles, in a really garlicky white wine sauce.

Some of the friendliest staff we’ve encountered in London dispel any notions that this wine bar might be stuffy about its commitment to the grape.

That doesn’t mean it’s not serious: it offers 25 wines by the glass, 300 by the bottle, all available to take away.

On our visit, an Austrian ‘wine flight’ for £10 promised an interesting exploration of the country’s lesser-known styles.

And it’s when you’re dining that the appeal of Vinoteca really becomes clear: even without the fabulous wines, it would still be a great restaurant.

Dishes such as mussels, clams and john dory with chorizo, or barnsley chop with greens, are excellent combinations of light, bright flavours – and go perfectly with the recommended wines.
