Offering delivery, take-away and a time-warp eat-in option, this has been tipped as the “cheapest, good quality and well portioned Indian on the street,” by long-time Drummond business owner, Harish from the Indian Spice Shop.

As a hotbed of Indian dining, Drummond Street is still a magnet for curryholics and anyone else seeking a good, cheap meal.

Fortunately, the prices are also well out of date - visit on a Monday for the daily special consisting of cashew-nut pilau rice and cauliflower curry served with a small salad and a little bowl of mint yoghurt chutney for the princely sum of £3.50.

On Tuesday, there's vegetable biryani with curry (£3.95); on Wednesday, aloo palak with chapatti (£3.50); and the specials wind onwards to the extravagance on Saturday of chana batura (£4.25) - a delicious fried bread with a chickpea curry.

The Ravi Shankar may look plain, and the seating may not be ultra-comfortable - but the food is very honest and very cheap, which is something that weighs heavily with a loyal clientele who make it a busy place even while the waiters in the more orthodox (and more expensive) curry house on the other side of Drummond Street are kicking their heels.
