Roti King – Hidden But Popular, For Authentic Malaysian and ...

[London] Roti King, a Malaysian – Singaporean street food restaurant, is peculiar in that it is both exceedingly popular and a cherished secret.

Though conveniently placed a couple of minutes from Euston station, Roti King resides in the basement of 40 Doric Way.

If you are looking for a light lunch, then one of the Roti dishes (a type of Malaysian flat bread) would do, the best being the Roti Canai Special (£6.50, SGD$12.05) soft elastic flatbread with beautifully spiced bowls of unctuous fish, lamb or chicken curry.

The Nasi Goreng – stir fried rice with eggs, seafood, and chicken (£7.00, SGD$13.00); and the Beef Rendang – beef slow cooked in aromatic spices and coconut sauce with rice (£7.50, SGD$13.90) are some of the must try Malaysian classics.

Special mention also go to the Lamb Murtabak (£5.50, SGD$10.90) and the delightful Nasi Lemak (£7.00, SGD$13.00) – steamed coconut rice served with peanuts, fried anchovies, cucumber, egg, chilli sambal and spiced fried chicken.

Another dish which I’d call for on my death bed is Roti Canai - the Malaysian flatbread which is traditionally served with a little pot of curry on the side.

Whilst en route to meet friends in London I made a pit stop at Roti King, an unassuming basement restaurant in a side street near Euston, and managed to eat the best roti canai of my life.

Two stonkingly good roti canai were served with a mega-deeply flavoured on the bone lamb curry.

Even more impressively, if you have dhal instead of lamb then it’s a mere £4 - one of the best value lunches in the capital.

Roti Telur (£3), was another stonkingly good flatbread made from the same dough as the roti canai, I think.

It’s worth emphasising that if you’re looking for elegant surroundings and graceful service then Roti King isn’t the place for you.

Soft, thin and lightly elastic roti were perfect for spooning or mopping up the thin, lightly spicy and coconutty curry sauce served on the side.

It’s worth saving some room for dessert, all of which are sweet versions of roti.

To paraphrase The Flame Haired Squelchie, you could nothing but eat the roti here and still walk away happy.

What to order: Roti, roti and more roti; Beef rendang What to skip: Any of the Cantonese fillers.

'The mutton curry is so dark, so brooding, so lacking in social graces, it makes other curries look like terrible fops' Sorry, folks, but this week's restaurant is not pretty.

Bring us the roti menu!

Then murtabak: roti stuffed with chicken curry.

It was Jenny Linford, author of the excellent Food Lovers' London, and a gal who knows her way around the city's lesser-travelled byways, who alerted me to Roti King.

So, skip the Chinese dishes (although the handful of Malay ones aren’t bad), and ask for the ‘Roti King’ menu instead.

The plain rotis come with curries (chicken/lamb/fish/lentil, all costing £5.50).

We liked the warm, tangy fish option; or the ‘murtabak’, which has a dry meat curry sandwiched into the dough (£5).

The mildly spiced lamb version came cut into thick squares and with a bowl of thin veggie curry for dipping.

Yep, for Roti this place is a revelation.
