I took a good friend to a restaurant I’ve not visited before, but one which was their all time favourite dining spots.

The salad was actually rather good, full of coriander, lime, and tossed in a lovely chilli yuzu sauce.

My dining companion recommend this dish (uh-oh), I was on the edge of my seat, begging for it to be as good as they say.

The sweet soy sauce had a good balance of sweetness, turning each mouthful into a salivating affair, even the side of veg was nice.

I know I said the prawns were good, but this steak should really be top of your list and considering the relatively affordable price tag – you get a lot of quality meat on your plate for the money.

The al fresco dining space will vaunt a new seafood-led menu and lobster shack with takeaway dishes for riverside picnics.

The terrace is divided into two halves – with an al fresco restaurant with full dining menu to one side and the more casual Lobster Shack to the other side.

On the Lobster Shack menu: lobster rolls, ceviche tacos and seasonal oysters as well as Perrier-Jout Champagne by the glass, takeaway half bottles and picnic packages in their signature coolers.

On the menu: Clay Baked Lobster (half or whole); Market Fish of the Day; Poached Shrimp Salad; and Tuna Tartare.

The wine list will feature the entire Perriet-Jout range of bottles and vintage champagnes – from Perrier-Jout Grand Brut through to Belle poque – as well as a select choice of ros wine by the glass or bottle.

The association with Virginia Woolf’s Mrs Dalloway is perhaps a little misplaced for The Bloomsbury’s Dalloway Terrace, despite the obvious literary connection.

As part of The Bloomsbury hotel, expect a high level of service and plenty of British favourites on the all day dining menu, from fish and chips to rabbit stew, with other influences including European from steak tartar and hints of Japanese in the miso cod.

Each day has an assigned daily special dishes from crayfish mac and cheese to grilled poussin.

I chose the black valley lamb cutlets; a trio of large cuts with a rich champ – ab Irish version of mashed potato with spring onions – and roasted vine tomatoes, which made my side order of cauliflower cheese slightly redundant.

In true alpine spirit, there’s a chocolate fondue, served in a mini La Creuset dish atop a little flame filled with white chocolate and a side dish of fruit and a fondue stick to dip them in with.

These are all values clearly reflected in his signature classic style, a sophisticated blend of richly comforting dishes with elegant touches of innovation.

All showcased ultimately on the plate with spectacular produce straight from the restaurant’s organic kitchen garden, from across The New Forest and from the neighbouring coastal counties of Hampshire and Dorset.

This small-plates brasserie fits the bill for a quick pre-theatre bite but it's no destination and the bill mounts quickly.

The National Theatre has lots of café-bar areas, which ebb and flow like tides; a surprisingly good restaurant, called House; and then this small-plates brasserie.

What’s good about Terrace is the waiting staff’s first enquiry: ‘Are you going to see a show?’

The menu reads well enough: a mixture of modishly Mediterranean and international dishes.

If you have enough time to dine at the aforementioned House, it is much preferable (if even pricier), and a mere minute’s walk away.
