Singapore Garden: Heralding Food Eden [Review] | London Eater

The uniqueness of Singaporean cuisine is the melding of the local cultures, with the Malay influences, Indian Influences, Chinese and even British food in the mix, for good measure.

The Hainanese in Me I really miss good steamed chicken and rice and I am under the impression that the Hainanese Chicken recipe is a healthy one.

I was expecting a silky, melt in your mouth softness; instead I was confronted with just a mildly steamed chicken – the taste was good, lots of infused flavours of stock, soya and ginger, but sadly the tenderness of the meat wasn’t quite up there.

Perhaps that niggling is down to the prices, which are just abit steeper than I’d expect – £7.70 for chicken rice is just a little outside of what I’d like to pay and the £13 sambal prawns are undeserved I reckon.

Restaurant review: Singapore Garden, London - Resonate

From Chinese-influenced dishes such as Hokkien mee and bak kut teh to Malay-influenced favourites including nasi goreng and roti john, the diversity in Singaporean meals is certainly its main appeal.

With this in mind, I was thrilled to find the gem that is Singapore Garden in Swiss Cottage that executes authentic and exquisite dishes from the Lion City.

The following dish to grace our table was the Fried Kuey Teow, one of Singapore Garden’s specialties.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with this dish, it involved flat rice noodles stir-fried with prawns, eggs, pork, soya sauce and a mild chili sauce.

If there was one definitive national dish for Singapore, it would most certainly be Hainanese Chicken Rice.

I used to be a regular at this restaurant for take aways as food overall was quite good (though EXPENSIVE)... Until they started to overcharge me for everything.

Apparently, for everything that is not on the menu (including sauce!)

Forget that the cost of aubergines with black bean sauce (on the menu) is the same as aubergines with oyster sauce (not on the menu), you got to pay an extra £1 for the sauce and if you plan to add/exchange anything else, good luck!

She had rudely told me that they charge extra for everything that is not on the menu (even if it does not cost them extra) and that i should feel free and post my review on this website (glad I have her support for this!)

You would expect for a restaurant with an £18/per person take away bill just for rice, chicken and veggies to have a slightly better level of service, would not you?

A beacon of good Straits cooking that continues to draw people from all over town to NW6.

Singapore Garden, a beacon of good Straits cooking, continues to draw people from all over town to NW6.

Singapore laksa (here served with rice vermicelli, beansprouts, prawns and fish cake) is another sure-fire winner – we lapped up every drop of the spicy coconut soup.

Fried hokkien mee (stir-fried egg noodles with prawns, egg and pork) is good enough to grace any table in Singapore.

Note that there’s also a Singapore Garden takeaway outlet in Chiswick (474 Chiswick High Road, W4 5TT, 8994 2222).
