The Relaunch of Dirty Bones Kensington (& *those* cheeseburger ...

My desires range from cheeseburgers to mac and cheese to the sort of filthy candy that only the Americans would think of (what even is a Tootsie Roll, apart from delicious?!)

The Cheeseburger Gyoza are as delicious as they are surprising.

Imagine thin, perfectly crisp, fried gyoza, golden from a pan, filled with succulent ‘burger’ mince and mustardy yellow Cheeseburger sauce.

Between the wings and the Cheeseburger Gyoza, we’ve already had quite a lot of rich food.

If you feel like having a hot date with a cheeseburger gyoza, then Dirty Bones is a good place to go.

"...it was the proper hot dogs that stole the show.

Three kinds (beef, pork, veggie) were all impeccably sourced and came in five variations, all served in pillowy brioche buns.

Our combo of ‘Mexican’ filling (tender pork pibil, fiery salsa and a lick of sour cream) with pork dog (meaty, smoky and juicy, with a proper ‘knack’) was one of the best restaurant hot dogs we’ve had in London. "

To start, a bowl of lamb kofta came with a side of khubus, a round Arabic bread which looks like a poppadum and has the texture of a tortilla – warm, chewy and with a slight crunch when you first bite into it.

The lamb was rich and tender served on top of creamy mashed potatoes, drizzled in a sweet and sour pomegranate molasses and topped with golden pine nuts.

The waiters recommended the mozat laham, braised lamb shank, Villa Mamas’ signature dish.

Tender lamb is slowly cooked for hours with a mixture of seven different herbs (which are secret to Roaya), and served with vermicelli rice which is a combination of basmati rice, vermicelli pasta and more pine nuts.

The non-alcoholic Prunus was very sweet with slightly sour notes from the plums – a good one to have instead of dessert.

Styled as a basement ‘dive and dog bar’ – hot dogs, that is – it’s a triumph of studied retro cool.

Dishes include the ‘burger dog’ – a sausage-shaped burger in a finger bun, with melted cheese down its centre.

Nice idea, but it was the proper hot dogs that stole the show.

Our combo of ‘Mexican’ filling (tender pork pibil, fiery salsa and a lick of sour cream) with pork dog (meaty, smoky and juicy, with a proper ‘knack’) was one of the best restaurant hot dogs we’ve had in London.

But staff on our visit coped well with the unrelenting influx of young west Londoners, each batch seemingly more modish and attractive than the last.
