TIME OUT LOVE LONDON AWARDS – MY PUTNEY – A Spoonful ...

Maybe I’m getting old but the highlight of my week is meeting my friend Milli at Putney Bridge early on a Saturday morning and walking along the river to Barnes and back.

If you want proper coffee in Putney, Ground Coffee Social (formally Grind Coffee) is the best place to go.

After our walk, I tend to pop to Putney Market which is at the bottom of Putney High Street (next to St Mary’s Church) to stock up on bread, pastries, meat, cheese, fruit and veg and quite often, breakfast in a bun!

Just a little further along the Upper Richmond Road, just by East Putney tube station is Valentina, a family run and owned Italian deli selling meats, salamis, cheeses and traditional antipasti.

Another fantastic restaurant in Putney is Isola Del Sole.

Although there is no sommelier and the waitresses aren’t overly knowledgeable, the wine list is good and you can dazzle your date with the fun fact that Sardinia has long been a vinous landmark, nicknamed “wine island” in the 16th Century.

Plan your arrival carefully to avoid your date feeling underwhelmed by the fact that you’re meeting just off Putney High Street, and instead suggest a drink by the river beforehand.

This is the type of restaurant that is buzzing late into the evening and they are very laid back about timings so there’s no rush and the size of the restaurant makes it better with a few full tables.

You’ll stumble out to a South West London street feeling mischievously anonymous, like well fed rebels in suburbia.

The location of this restaurant (down a fairly unexceptional looking road) could could put your date off– but just make sure you include the river and a walk over the bridge at either the start of end of the evening to offset the frumpier milieu.

Putney’s Isola Del Sole is open for lunch, dinner, and drinks.

This London Italian restaurant south of the river remains true to the ethos that would hold sway in any native Sardinian kitchen – simple, seasonal recipes bursting with flavour and freshness, presented beautifully and with pride.

Lunch here down Lacy Road, just off Putney High Street, runs from noon to 2:30pm, and though the menu changes almost every day, you can expect dishes such as Isola Del Sole’s gnocchi al campidano (homemade Sardinian gnocchi with pork ragout) to take your breath away.

After closing in the afternoon (not for a siesta but to prepare for the next wave of fans of this superior Italian restaurant), Isola Del Sole opens again at 6pm with a lavish dinner menu that includes a traditional antipasto Sardo and an emphasis on seafood, as befits the island-bound heritage of Sardinian cuisine – the pan-fried prawns with saffron-infused Sardinian couscous is a must, and indicative of Sardinian regional cuisine’s dialogue with North African and Middle Eastern cuisines.

Isola Del Sole are also able to take what they do down Putney’s Lacy Road to your own home or event, with a fantastic catering service popular across London.

Well looked after as always as same owner of viva Italia which is also another outstanding restaurant, hence why we wanted to try his new restaurant The Italian Steakhouse.

Amazing Owner was very attentive and made me a pasta sauce off the menu to cater for my personal preferences.

The food however is really good, reasonably authentic Italian food.

Pizzas were great, pasta good, steaks well cooked.

Excellent little restaurant, service was very quick did not wait longer to order or for starters and main course and food was of a very good quality.

An authentic and popular Sardinian restaurant on Lacey Road, Putney.

There's an emphasis on the dishes and produce of Sardinia, though other Italian regions feature too.

Pasta dishes such as pappardelle with wild boar ragu and tagliatelle with fresh tiger prawns and cherry tomatoes prove popular here.

Third courses include Sardinian-style roast pork belly with borlotti beans and sautéed spinach, and pan-fried prawns with Sardinian cous cous and saffron.

The wine list concentrates on Sardinian bottles, though drops from Marche, Friuli, Tuscany and Piemonte also feature.
