This is a good gastro pub in Southfields.

"This is a good gastro pub in Southfields.

We took Malaysian friends there to experience a London pub.

Drinks are self service and ordering is done at the bar.

Food service was efficient.

Paired with the lovely warmth in the room, some fantastic craft beers and a very good, accessible wine list – this is the sort of place you only wish was on your doorstop.

The batter on the fish was good, nice and golden but there just a little something missing – I couldn’t quite put my finger on it.

The batter on the fish was good, nice and golden but there just a little something missing – I couldn’t quite put my finger on it.

It truly is the local pub you’d want on your doorstop, with its cosy charm, outside seating in the summer and a good selection of drinks – with the added bonus of some good quality pub food.

There is certainly room for improvement on the food side and as a local pub perhaps I’m looking deeper in to this more than I need to – but they were just awarded a Bib Gourmand and that’s nothing to snigger at.

Spencer House, London - Wikipedia

Spencer House at 27 St. James's Place is a mansion in St James's, London, England, and is the property of the Earl Spencer.

[1] In 1758 James 'Athenian' Stuart who had studied the arcadian values of Ancient Greek architecture replaced Vardy as the architect of the project; as a direct result of this Spencer House was to have authentic Greek details in the internal decoration, and thus it became one of the first examples in London of the neoclassical style, which was to sweep the country.

As the home of successive Earls and Countesses Spencer the state rooms of the house became a theatre for the pageant that was London high society.

The lease of Spencer house is valued at 35 million pounds in the 2017 RIT capital Plc annual report.

Together with Lancaster House, Bridgwater House, Dudley House and Apsley House, Spencer House is one of the last of the many aristocratic townhouses which once adorned central London.

Earl Spencer | Bars and pubs in Southfields, London

On a cold and wet Saturday afternoon there are two types of pub.

One where you decide 'well, that's us here for the rest of the day' and the other where you longingly look out of the window and question 'how cold and wet is it really?'

The Earl Spencer falls into the second category.

But there needs to be more, and in truth this is a soul-less, echoey husk that is closer to a restaurant than a pub (the food, it should be said, is excellent).

on leaving the pub the answer was still the same – 'because you live there'.
