El Vergel - London Restaurant Reviews | Hardens

Chimichurris - La Parrilla Argentine restaurant (El Vergel) Southwark ...

The hugely popular Latin American cafe 'El Vergel' relocated in November 2009 from Lant Street to a much bigger and more prominent location in the MyBaSE1 development at the junction of Webber Street, Southwark Bridge Road and Great Suffolk Street.

In 2017 the restaurant downsized to a smaller unit with its entrance on Southwark Bridge Road, and later in the year the space became home to Chimichurris (Chimi's).

On behalf of Sounds and Colours, I went on a mission to discover Latin American food in London, and the search had me visit restaurants of Argentinian, Brazilian, Cuban, Mexican, Peruvian food, as well as a couple that mixed and matched flavours of different South American cuisines.

In this article you’ll find all restaurants I’ve visited and that’s because the quality of food was amazing in every single one, but I will also be giving you my favourite for each of the cuisines.

Normally taking my steak medium-well, I took a chance here to try the recommended medium-rare and was happily surprised by the softness and flavour contained in both steaks – Juan informed me all steaks prepared in the restaurant are vacuum-packed straight after the cut in Argentina, and shipped to London.

The influence comes from large Hispanic communities in the USA and Mexico itself; Eric and Dan created Chilango because they found hard to find good Mexican food in London, and in my opinion they did a wonderful job to make their creation available throughout London now that there are 12 London branches – and one in Manchester!

(Camden Market, The Stables Market, Chalk Farm Rd, London NW1 8AH) – Brazilian food with a European influence in the flavouring!

But then, almost when you’ve given up hope, El Vergel appears as some kind of Latin American oasis.

The canteen style layout is also very chummy – I can imagine the large tables are perfect for becoming best friends with other patrons over a few beers.

Each table was adorned with a little chalkboard urging customers to try their smoothies.

In amongst the more traditional Latin American fare that you might find elsewhere – tacos, namely – there’s superb value churrasco sandwiches with grilled steak, served on Chilean style bread.

It’s a little out of the way for most, sadly – but if you’re visiting the South Bank, London Bridge or perhaps the Tate Modern, it’s not too far of a walk to enjoy some tasty Latin American treats.

food

El Vergel is a stark restaurant with polished concrete floors and grey walls – one of which is covered in colourful doodles that look a bit like a five-year-old’s graffiti.

This is a shame, because there’s a lot to like about El Vergel.

Good too was the restaurant’s signature Chilean steak sandwich which contained a juicy slab of meat drenched in oozing cheese.

But instead, El Vergel closes at 3pm on weekdays and 4pm on a Saturday, making this strictly a breakfast, brunch and lunch place – a good option for a quick bite if you live or work nearby but not so convenient for the rest of us.

Unless you’ve got a five-year-old who really likes drawing on walls.
