Cakes & ale… & oysters in London at the aptly named English Restaurant hard by Spitalfields Market.

So the English Restaurant has a lot of deep-pocketed competition, but Spitalfields has become a proud community protective of its own and the independent place continues to thrive on the custom of residents like Fiona Atkins, proprietor of the Town House Gallery (eighteenth century cooking manuscripts and prints of Christ Church, among other lovelies) and Jeanette Winterson, who needs no introduction.

The English Restaurant feels both raucous and soothing, an atmosphere reinforced by the saucy staff: ‘It says ‘oyster bar’ on the signs.

Colchester retains a potent cachet for oyster fiends, and judging from ours at the English Restaurant the minerally waters at the mouth of the River Coln have an effect on the flavor of the rock as salubrious as it was (is?)

It all worked equally well with a glass of Champagne (the house, whatever it was, was good) or some pints of Redemption, the name of those doubly fitting because by serving English oysters on the half shell the English Restaurant helps to keep a flagging London tradition alive.

Snug, comforting and quaint, The English Restaurant has been independently run by Kay and Peter Sinden since 2001.

A local's favourite, it was originally known as the Market Coffee House, and continues to be a hub of the Spitalfields community.

Gently creaking to the sound of weathered floorboards, old rickety tables and chairs and wooden slats, time in here seems to fade away.

All the traditional English staples buttered crumpets, homemade cakes, hot chocolate, ginger beer - designed to warm up the frostiest of insides, are on offer here in abundance.

Perched on a corner street near the vibrant Old Spitalfields Market it can get busy at the weekend but is still worth paying a visit if youre in the area maybe after a hectic rummage at the market.

Eating London Food Tour Review | Travel Yourself

Recently while visiting London I had the opportunity to take a food walking tour of the east end with Eating London Tours and I was quite literally blown away by both the typical English and non-English the food that was on offer.

The best fish and chips in all of the United Kingdom As the tour went on, a trend was starting to appear and that was that we weren’t just tasting great food but it was the best London has to offer and the next place we visited wasn’t any different.

You can’t do a food tour of London’s east end without stopping and enjoying some curry on the city’s famous Brick Lane.

With 55 curry houses on Brick Lane alone it is definitely hard to decide which one is the best however apparently one of the owners of the Eating London food tours took it upon herself to taste test the curries at every shop to determine who makes the finest curries of them all.

A great food tour in my opinion ends with some tasty form of chocolate and the Eating London food tours got it right with our last stop.

The East End of London is typically associated with cockneys, the docklands, and pearly kings and queens.

Once seen as an impoverished part of London, East London has done much to rejuvenate itself over the years, with the turning point being the 2012 Olympic Games, held in Stratford.

Thea areas to explore are: This once rundown part of London is now awash with fashionable galleries, trendy café-bars and restaurants.

Next to the market is Brick Lane, home to London’s Bangladeshi community and famous for its curry restaurants.

The GLC regularly frequents London’s famous Brick Lane for a curry.

Good food, prompt but not rushed service, friendly staff who looked after our group very well, lovely old establisment with warm atmosphere, great location.

The food was just right and the service professional but also relaxed in a nice way.

The food was reasonably good but the service was terrible.

This restaurant offer cosy wooden interiors with private booths allowing better conversation , interesting, tasty food, in reasonable sized portions, and all of it made the better for being washed down with Trumans beer - well done to the establishment for supporting local breweries, even if the wine is all French!

The English Restaurant has a friendly ambience and always delivers good service and food.
