Zengi, Commercial Street, London | Restaurants/Mediterranean ...

Zengi restaurant on Commercial Road in Aldgate in the City of London is a Middle Eastern restaurant that is authentic and delightful.

Zengi was named after a 12th century Turkish dynasty that ruled an area from northern Iraq to eastern Turkey, so the halal menu at the Zengi includes dishes from right across the region.

The menu includes hot and cold mezze, pide, grills and stews, some of them regional variations on your Middle Eastern favourites, so a meal here can be a bit adventurous if you're so inclined.

The dining room is smart and comfortable, a modern translation of Turkish design, with exposed brick, creamy walls, wrought iron dividers and lambs, lovely upholstery and twinkling candles.

The chefs are Turkish with decades of experience and the waitstaff are keen and helpful.

I normally go to Green Lanes, particularly “Antepliler” for my fix of Turkish food, but we were curious to try a local BYO place with some interesting Iraq dishes on their menu.

Ali was very attentive, and took great care and time explaining the various dishes on the menu to us.

For main, I went for “Char-grilled Lamb Chops” @ £9.50 - this is my favourite dish at Antepliler, so I ordered this to find how Zengi’s version would compare.

Ali brought us our bill, and I noted that he accidentally overcharged us on the lamb chops but had forgotten to add the Mosul Kibbeh or the hot bread to the list of items.

I enjoyed my visit to Zengi and would like to return specially for their Turkish Burger and some of the other Iraq dishes I did not try this time.

It’s never easy finding the right words for describing such a unique and singularly wonderful restaurant such as Zengi.

Shall we start with the food at the risk of neglecting some of the other wonderful things they do?

With an amazing array of very special Mediterranean foods, Zengi introduced Spitalfields’s Commercial Street to Lebanese dining.

And namely, that’s bringing fresh and lovingly prepared dishes with an Arab twist to London food lovers.

Those who have a fetish for creamy foods are urged to surrender to their yearnings with an order of Zengi’s perfectly velvety hummus.

On a fine day you’ll spot customers at Zengi’s pavement tables puffing on shisha pipes and sending plumes of perfumed smoke up in the air.

On the informal ground floor, chefs are busy grilling meat over charcoal and pulling freshly baked flatbread from the pizza oven.

Mains are consistently excellent: the Zengi mixed grill provides a taste of gently marinated chicken, melt-in-the-mouth lamb pieces and thick, lean köfte.

Our khema (a dense stew of lentils and minced lamb) was authentic, and the turkish pizzas light, packed with meat and full of flavour.

Every bit as tasty – and excellent value too – are the falafel and the grilled meat sandwiches.
