Cau (cleverly pronounced as ‘cow’) stands for Carne Argentina Unica, a chain of Argentinian steakhouses by the same people behind Gaucho.

I visited the Cau St Katharine Docks branch which is located in the newly refurbished Commodity Quay.

Designed to embody the spirit of the trendy area of Palermo, Buenos Aires, the design of the Cau St Katharine Docks was sharp and funky with booth seating and bright blue sky and grass imagery.

Cau has a quirkiness to it, notably with the waiters and waitresses wearing endearing ‘cauboy’ and ‘caugirl’ T’shirts.

The menu at Cau displays the best of Argentinan grass-fed beef.

Oliver Maki, a Japanese restaurant located on Dean Street, Soho, was founded by Lebanese-Canadian Oliver Maki and his family.

For maki we chose the interesting sounding wagyu burger maki (6pcs) (£18.00) made from Australian wagyu with a mushroom sauce, avocado, Japanese pickles, tomato and cucumber on a base of rice.

To the mains, and a matcha yuki udon (£13.70) consisted of stir fried homemade green tea udon with thinly sliced scallops, shiitake, black truffle oil and dill.

For dessert we opted for the Terrarium matcha tiramisu (£8) made up of fresh mascarpone, white and dark chocolate, green tea, and “rock” chocolate on the side (chocolate made to resemble the appearance of a piece of rock).

Oliver Maki makes a nice mark in the world of Japanese fusion cuisine, balancing traditional Japanese food with a contemporary culinary approach.

CAU central London site St Katharine Docks

Review analysis
location

It will be the group’s ninth UK site and first in central London, though sites opened in nearby Henley-on-Thames and Wimbledon this year.

CAU’s operational director Graham Hall told BigHospitality that the group intends to expand further in London, and is hoping to open between one and two sites there a year.

CAU is also looking to expand throughout the rest of the UK at a rate of six or seven sites a year.

Its design will follow that of the most recent CAU sites in Henley-on-Thames and Wimbledon, and it will share the same seasonal menu as the rest of the restaurants in the group.

“The St Katharine Docks site has everything,” said Hall.
