Last week we were invited down to check out the new Barrio Brixton cocktail bar/restaurant that has just opened up on Acre Lane, in the premises formerly occupied by the Verandah Bar.

Unlike some of new businesses setting up shop in Brixton, Barrio has been hiring local people and I was pleased to see that my two friends were on the payroll.

Good work, Barrio management!

And very nice they were too 🙂 This rum – as recommended by the friendly and knowledgeable bar manageress – was magnificent.

Barrio really don’t like being described as a ‘chain’, but with this being their fourth upmarket bar/restaurant in London – and all four going under the same name with similarly themed interiors – we’re not sure what else we could call them (I’m afraid we can’t go with this ‘family’ nonsense).

Following on from their Angel, Soho and Shoreditch sites, the latest Barrio blends that Latin American feel-good factor with the vibrant spirit of the Brixton community.

Offering visitors the chance to get up close and personal with the sights, tastes and sounds of far flung Latin cultures, you’ll find their latest 200-capacity site on Acre Lane.

Barrio Brixton also focuses on anticuchos - succulent skewers of spiced, marinated meats once again inspired by the cuisine of Lima.

The Brixton site showcases a new drinks menu comprising of brand new signature blends as well as some glorious Barrio classics.

Open until 2am for late night drinking and dancing - as well as offering brunch from 10am - at the weekends, Barrio Brixton is a vibrant and accessible hangout for any day of the week.

Flowing out onto the street with its perfectly sized courtyard known aptly as ‘El Patio’, Barrio brings a bit of South American heat to Brixton.

This Barrio takes on more of the cantina vibe where the venue's street food offering really comes to light; so you’ll find the place packed out with table sittings.

The standout cocktail of the evening was the Che Guava (£8.50) – a heady mix of Santa Teresa Rum, Vida Mezcal, guava, passion fruit and a hint of lime.

They play more on the cantina vibes than in any other Barrio, making the best use of their space and leading the movement of casual dining.

It’s got a bit of everything you’re looking for: authentic bites, danceable beats and cocktails to see you through the late nights.

The latest in Barrio’s series of colourful cocktail bars is full of the unexpected.

Equally unexpected is the stuff that comes out of the kitchen.

It’s a shame the same can’t be said about the cocktails.

Maybe unexpected isn’t such a good thing after all.

Barrio Brixton is the latest addition to the growing Barrio familia, who currently have Latin outposts in three other locations.

A neighbourhood that is already abuzz, Barrio Brixton takes inspiration from the local markets, arcades and brewers to create a fun, local hangout with delicious food and drink offerings.

From tequilas and mezcals, to piscos and rums, Barrio Brixton brings its love of sunny spirits to the heart of South London.

Beer lovers will also be satisfied, as brewery-fresh tank beer will take pride of place alongside other local and Latin craft brews, even in one of the cocktails.
