Just round the corner from Fujirama - winner of 2005's LondonTown.com Award for Best Budget Restaurant - does not sound like the best place to open a Japanese restaurant, but Ichiban Sushi seems to be holding its own.

While its rival is a busy, bustling, kitschy place, Ichiban has aimed a little more upmarket, with clean, basic decor, and a menu focus on sushi.

We also had some excellent Agadashi Dofu (tofu soup), and if it was all a little pricy for this part of London, it certainly didn't break the bank.

Service was a little slack, but thoroughly charming, with plenty of banter between the staff and the regular customers.

Not quite as special as Fujirama, then, but certainly a very decent sushi restaurant that should ensure that its local rival keeps on its toes.

Today though there seemed to be a reason - supporters of former kitchen staff were having a massive protest outside at Ichiban's failure to pay holidays and maternity pay over years and continued refusal to cough up.

But not any more - if they can't treat their staff properly I'l be staying away till they can assure me they have sorted this out.

Their thing is fast food with a luxury twist, so the burgers are made with Wagyu, 28-day-aged Angus beef and truffle oil.

They’re also doing ramen, as well as spring rolls with ingredients like Snow Crab and more of that Wagyu beef with cheese.

Yes, that’s a Wagyu cheeseburger spring roll.

A bowl of ramen is £9-11 and a burger (or other sandwich) £10.50-11.50.

This is fast food with a cheeky twist and we have to say that, despite ourselves, we’re going to have to try that cheeseburger spring roll.

The first one on St Giles High Street is perpetually crowded with earnest ramen devotees.

I say ‘earnest’ because, for pit-stop food pivoting around noodles in porky stock, ramen attracts geek gourmands and food pedants like a jam sandwich next to an anthill.

Real ramen, to the groupies, is only found in the Fukuoka region on the island of Kyushu, in a basement kitchen that simmers its bone broth for at least a week.

At this point, I’d like to counter that London’s best ramen is probably served at Tonkotsu, Mare Street, Hackney.

I beat the queue at Kanada-Ya, yes, but I’ll still be beating a retreat to Tonkotsu when my ramen habit next comes knocking.
