Whenever my husband is away for the weekend you can pretty much guarantee that my Friday night will consist of a large takeaway pizza, a bottle of cheap white wine and a terrible Rom Com.

But despite my terrible taste in cheap wine and movies, I think most people would agree with me that a good pizza can be one of the most pleasing things ever.

In fact, there is a simplicity to the whole menu that I really liked: they only sell ten different pizzas that come in a maximum of two sizes, and they only serve one type of beer, one red wine, one white wine and one rosé, a few soft drinks and no sides.

We had a table for two and initially this was a bit of a logistical nightmare when faced with a 20 inch pizza on a wooden board, a bottle of water with two glasses, a huge magnum of wine, with two more glasses, a metal tub of napkins and two paper plates.

Just to bang on a bit more about the actual pizza crust, I can’t express how much I was impressed with it; soft and squishy with a good wood-fire char on the bottom.

Da Michele is a foreign outpost of arguably, possibly, probably, the best pizzeria in Naples, which is less arguably the original and best place to eat pizza.

Margherita; tomato sauce with fior di latte, (a buffalo milk cheese that’s better for pizza because it’s not as watery as mozzarella) and basil, and Marinara with tomato sauce, garlic and oregano.

Caputo flour, recognised as the best pizza flour in the business, from a local miller, canned San Marzano tomatoes that grow on the fertile slopes of Vesuvius, fior di latte from a producer on the Amalfi coast.

I asked Marco what the differences between a Da Michele pizza in Naples and one in Stokey.

We marvelled anew at the specific and contrasting perfections of the grilled black and soft chew of the crust, the way the dough was salted but not the tomato sauce (which is made from crushed canned tomatoes and nothing else), the way the textures of crunch and soft went back and forth.

My previous visit had been at lunch, whereas this dinner service was frenetic, with every table taken and tables being turned all around us.

Focaccia is made in-house and was very good, cooked in the pizza oven and having lovely texture (13/20).

Incidentally, although it is listed amongst the starters and nibbles, the focaccia arrives as a large disc, almost as big as one of the pizzas, so bear this in mind when ordering.

Just as at my previous visit, the base had excellent, supple texture (13/20).

This visit confirms my opinion that this is as good as any pizza in the capital.

New restaurants are opening all the time in Stoke Newington, and here’s another: an authentically Neapolitan pizza place on the High Street.

When it comes to pizza, Londoners are an educated bunch these days – a stuffed-crust meat feast doesn’t quite cut it.

But you probably won’t notice the bare plasterboard walls or the functional cable ducting, because the pizzas are so good.

The chefs use their Neapolitan hardware to great effect, turning out thin, flash-cooked pizzas with still-runny tomato sauce and minimalist toppings (quality sausages, pecorino, porcini and chestnut).

There are a couple of salads and starters, too.

The friendly, slightly trendy mood is helped by an alcove for table football.

The menu, printed on Polpo-style manila paper, lists ten pizzas.

’Nduja, a spicy Calabrian sausage, is paired well with a simple marinara sauce.

Salsiccia e friarielli (fennel sausage and a type of brassica leaf), and calzone with prosciutto cotto, ricotta, mushrooms and fior di latte are other enticing combos.

Wine is served by the carafe, adding to the 1960s feel; alternative tipples include prosecco and trendy Venetian cocktails such as negroni or spritz.
