With an added squeeze of the lemon slice, these were actually really nice and the portion size was very generous.

My mum went for the smoked haddock and cod fish cake (£4.95).

My mum ordered cod and chips (£10.50), which looked a lot more appealing than my own dish.

It would have been nice to explore the dessert menu as I noticed they offer battered chocolate bars and Mrs Sutton's home made cakes.

Fish and chips aren't just for Fridays.

Stoke Newington based chippy Sutton & Sons is proving such a success (also opening in Boxpark in Shoreditch) they're opening a new site in Islington's Essex Road.

It's an street that's not blessed with great places to eat and owners Danny and Hana Sutton are confident they'll soon become a local favourite.

Founder Danny Sutton said they leapt at the chance of a fourth site in Islington: "We are excited to start spreading our food offering to a new audience in the capital", he said.

Sutton and Sons opens 14 October 2015 at 356 Essex Road, London N1 opening 7 days a week for lunch and dinner.

food

An ever-popular Stoke Newington chippie that knows how to cater for its demanding customer base With monkfish, Maldon oysters and moules marinière on the menu, this is smarter than most chippies.

But Sutton & Sons knows on which side its bread is buttered, catering as it does for Stoke Newington foodies.

Batter was crisp and not too greasy, and battered monkfish very good indeed, but skate wing a little under-seasoned.

Although you might expect a fancier battered sausage, Sutton’s keeps to tradition where it needs to and dishes up a nice old-fashioned saveloy.

Make sure you get in quick at the weekends if you want a slice of Mrs Sutton’s sticky toffee pudding – it often sells out.

An uptown fish and chip shop in downtown Hackney.

A dessert menu, chilled prosecco and bottles on the tables labelled ‘non-brewed condiment with onion flavour’ suggest that these guys are aiming above the output of neighbouring takeaway shops.

The whopping starter portion of calamari lacked flavour but deep-fried whitebait was borderline addictive – a genius addition to the usual fare that I would order again and again.

Instead, make a beeline for the whitebait, a fishy main and a portion of bright green mushy peas, leaving just enough room for the seven deadly sins cheesecake.

Mare Street is quickly becoming an innovate-or-evaporate restaurant strip, so kudos to Sutton and Sons for their high quality, inventive menu.
