Wolf Restaurant - Seasonal Italian Restaurant & Bar

A sanctuary amid the bustle of Stoke Newington, WOLF is a neighbourhood restaurant that celebrates authentic Italian food – and the Italian way of eating.

Using the finest local and speciality Italian ingredients, owner Antony Difrancesco and head chef Karla Knowles create seasonal, regional dishes that hail from all corners of the country.

Creamy burrata, tender gnudi and richly flavoured ragu: this is food that’s supposed to be lingered over.

And with an uncomplicated, all-Italian wine list; cocktails made with home-infused spirits; and freshly ground Italian coffee; there are plenty of reasons to stay a little longer.

Spend a little time at WOLF.

Fresh Italian comfort food at Wolf II, Finsbury Square's newest Piazza

I’ve only just realised what the connection between the restaurant name Wolf II and its Italian menu might be – Romulus, Remus, Wolves, Rome, etc.

If the evening wasn’t so balmy and the boxes of pasta from Wolf II weren’t so fresh and flavourful, I might ponder the relationship more.

Wolf II serves an all-Italian menu.

The menu at Wolf II is short – there are just a handful of starters and pasta mains – and once any of these dishes sell out, say on a busy lunch, then they’re not available until the next day.

Thanks to Wolf II for having us in.

Hailed as the best Italian kitchen in Hackney, WOLF is a popular neighbourhood restaurant on Stoke Newington High Street celebrating authentic Italian food and the Italian way of eating where you can leave the frenetic pace of London at the door.

WOLF has just launched a brand new weekend brunch menu, created by Head Chef, Karla Knowles, and available on Saturdays and Sundays from 9am to 4pm.

Reflecting Difrancesco’s Italian roots and the authenticity of restaurant, KAI have included a living wall and rustic shelving into the interior design, the latter of which is lined with Italian favourites and homemade liquor.

Those craving their morning fix of eggs will be pleased to see a whole egg section featured on the brunch menu with Italian-inspired dishes ranging from Fennel Sausage with deep fried egg, flat gnocchi & caramelised Tropea onions to our personal favourite of Morcilla (Italian blood sausage) with pancetta, blistered Datterino tomatoes, poached eggs & sourdough toast.

A sanctuary amid the noise & bustle of Stoke Newington, WOLF is a sophisticated Italian kitchen in the heart of Hackney catering for all tastes by delivering a crowd-pleasing choice of contemporary Italian dishes which firmly demonstrate that just as in Italy, food is the king.

On the other side of the table there’s a simple but utterly delicious pappardelle with wild boar ragu.

The sauce is so stunningly rich, a masterpiece of rural decadence, the meat melting into it with the same sigh of contentedness that escapes our lips as we eat it.

Pork with Delica Pumpkin and Chanterelle Mushrooms takes us back to refinement, with both vegetables bringing out a different side of the meat.

Again, this is a dish that would definitely work at a higher end restaurant, which is not surprising given head chef Mattia Antonioni’s background at Polpo.

Bombolini are simple Italian doughnuts, flavoured with melting flakes of chocolate and a little slick of custard.

The meal started well, with creamy burrata lightly flavoured with anchovy, and a warm pear and celeriac salad dripping with honey.

A fillet of lamb neck with cannellini bean puree was beautifully tender, but for some reason it was slathered in a brown, salty gravy that tasted worryingly like Heinz oxtail soup.

The cod had the opposite problem: though well cooked, both the fish and the celeriac puree beneath were so subtle as to be almost flavourless.

Desserts were good.

But by this point the staff’s inexperience was starting to show – a major interruption to our meal wasn’t apologised for, let alone compensated.
