West Dulwich is an area in south London, England, which straddles the London Borough of Lambeth and the London Borough of Southwark.

West Dulwich has two main parades of shops, the main one being on the Park Hall road junction, where Croxted Road becomes South Croxted Road.

At the local government level, West Dulwich is split between College Ward, East Dulwich and Village Ward in London Borough of Southwark and Gipsy Hill Ward and Thurlow Park Ward in London Borough of Lambeth.

This second Knight's Hill includes the hilly land between the western end of Thurlow Park Road (South Circular), Peabody Hill and Lovelace Road, where the adjoining Rosendale allotments in Dulwich stand today.

In addition to the College, other buildings of interest are Beauberry House (formerly Belair House); the Grade I listed All Saints Church, West Dulwich, home of the Lambeth Orchestra, which burned down in 2000 but reopened on the same site in 2006 thanks to the sustained work of parishioners and the local community; Kingswood House, a Grade II listed mansion; and the Rosendale pub, which is a historic coaching house that still retains the original Royal Doulton tiles.

This beautiful South London pub is a great local drinking spot with spacious, comfortable seating and three outside garden areas, including a heated and sheltered front terrace, a secluded side garden that has a secretive side, and a quieter area where there is a kid’s play area.

With a mouth-watering food menu and a drinks menu that is committed to quality, The Rosendale has British brewed ales alongside international wines and delicious cocktails.

Their food menu is based on classic pub fare, using locally sourced ingredients and meat from their own farm in Hampshire.

Or enjoy a more intimate gathering in the side garden.

For all this make sure you head down to The Rosendale.

If I lived in Notting Hill or Islington or Limehouse, I’d probably groan at the prospect of voyaging to darkest south London to a gastropub dinner.

But since I live only one street away from The Rosendale, I must congratulate the owner, Mark van der Goot, on his good sense in choosing such a cool, happening, upscale neighbourhood for his new venture.

Since I’d unaccountably never tried it before, I went for the dukka-spiced Kenzie Farm ostrich fillet with beef bobotie and sweet potato purée – an exotic sighting down Dulwich way, like discovering a llama in Croydon town hall.

Ostrich fillet turns out to be a lot like duck breast, dark and floppily gamey, only more coarse-textured.

It’s South African comfort food, minced beef baked with raisins and an egg-and-milk sauce, a bit like eating haggis with fruity bits.
