Venezuela in London: Mi Cocina Es Tuya – Café Latino, Crystal ...

Mi cocina es tuya (My kitchen is yours) bills itself as London’s only Venezuelan restaurant – perfect for our World in London series.

During the past three years, Alexis and Mary have served their traditional Venezuelan cuisine all over London, from the Carnaval del Pueblo to the Venezuelan Embassy.

Mi cocina es tuya is one of the few places in London you can enjoy typical Latin drinks like Malta, Sugarcane with lemon, and Cocada, which, I’m told, is like coconut milkshake, but much nicer.

Indeed, as well as being a lovely place for a traditional Venezuelan breakfast of Perico (scrambled eggs with chopped tomatoes, onions and coriander, black beans, cheese and arepa, or corn bread – much healthier, I’m assured than the Traditional English they also serve), Mi cocina es tuya is also something of a Latin American deli.

With guitars and maracas hanging from the walls, as well as plenty of gorgeous pictures of Venezuela itself, I think Mi cocina es tuya is a fantastic representation of Venezuelan London.

It turns out that I’m one bus ride away from Crystal Palace, which I’ve been wanting to visit for a while to see the Victorian dinosaur models in Crystal Palace park.

Of course, the Sunday I chose turned out to be freezing and wet, all the more reason to stay for a long lunch at nearby Mi Cocina Es Tuya, one of only two Venezuelan restaurants in London (and this was the only one for a long time).

In Venezuela, chicha is a very rich and very thick rice based drink that is not fermented.

Brought with the drinks were a pair of sauces that were on every table – I think this was a Venezuelan guasacaca, a garlicky avocado salsa, and a chilli sauce.

This was a thick fresh corn cake topped with spiced chicken and with a side of fresh crumbly white cheese on the side.

Allergy & food intolerance friendly restaurants in Croydon | Biteappy

I have made the difficult decision to sell Biteappy after four successful years developing the app and growing an amazing online community for people with varying dietary requirements and allergies.

To make Biteappy even bigger and better, it needs more commitment than I’m currently able to offer.

Its an exciting opportunity that I’m proud to pass on and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for Biteappy.

Mi Cocina Es Tuya is a south London Venezuelan restaurant lead by Mary and Alexis – proud promoters of this under-recognised cuisine.

Crystal Palace’s in-the-loop foodies are already well aware of the charms of the food from Latin America, and the pull of this Westow Street restaurant is slowly starting to exert itself on diners from across the capital.

Hence, on the menu at Mi Cocina Es Tuya on Westow Street diners are presented with a menu which offers spicy empanadas, and a riot of dishes from maize, black beans, beef, plantain, fish and chicken.

This unusual combination of ingredients is part of the reason that Mi Cocina Es Tuya in Crystal Palace is proving to be so popular.

The other reason for this south London success story is the famously warm Venezuelan hospitality guests receive at the hand of Mary and Alexis who welcome diners as old friends.
