The place used to be a squat, and is now cooperatively run, if you live in London, or will spend some time passing through and fancy yourself a cook, you can even apply to spend a night cooking there for friends, or passing trade.
The place is unlicensed but there is no corkage charge, and so you can bring your own wine and eat very well with alcohol.

We ended up arriving a little early, still over keen, which was, Margarete assured us in a rather stern voice, better than being late.

Last weekend the Escape section of the Observer published a piece by me about the Bonnington Cafe in London's Vauxhall, and in particular, its vegan night.
Flying Fish said that places like the Bonnington cafe were not for 'Observer restaurant critics'.
As I say in the original piece I think vegetarian food has to be good because it is meat free not in spite of the fact.
As proof that I am not simply biased against non-meat cookery per se I direct you to this review of three Indian restaurants, published last year, the third of which is a vegetarian place in Leicester which I liked very much.
What I have absolutely no time for is the suggestion that, because the restaurant is run by vegetarians or vegans (the para-military wing of the vegetarian movement, as Anthony Bourdain once memorably described them), it deserves to be left in peace.

I love the vegetarian - often vegan - culinary traditions of southern India, for example, or the non-meat dishes of Italy.
There are other cooks doing other things on different nights and I'm sure any of them would be happy to make sure there is a table 'lovingly reserved' for you.
Whether there will ever be another table lovingly reserved for me at the Bonnington Cafe is a different matter entirely.

This cooperatively run vegetarian and vegan restaurant was initially set up back in the '80s to serve the local community – many of whom were squatting nearby.
Today it retains the community feel, with a collective of cooks keeping the pans hot.
The clientele tends to comprise locals and regulars, too.
