Gamely inviting children to sit in the creamy interior of its Palm Court, then plying them with chocolate and berry-red puddings.

she shouts at the waiter, who sets down our glasses of champagne and milk and laughs as though he has never heard anything more delightful.

Sitting stout and stately as Queen Victoria at the top of Regent Street, The Langham is London's oldest grande dame hotel, though it is scented with ginger flower, not lavender.

The hotel's Palm Court is said to be the birthplace of traditional afternoon tea - Napoleon, Charles Dickens, Arthur Conan Doyle, Diana, Princess of Wales were all fortified here - and it has won Top London Afternoon Tea in recent years.

And has nice shiny shoes, Maisy notes, from under the table, where she and her teddy bear are working their way through a messy chocolate thing shaped like a steam train.

We arrived at a rather bright and elegant hotel reception and we were shown to a table in the lounge bar where the afternoon tea takes place.

Two options were available: The Goring afternoon tea (£37.50) – which consisted of unlimited tea, finger sandwiches, scones and a selection of desserts or the Bollinger afternoon tea (£47.50) which added a glass of Bollinger champagne with strawberries and cream.

We decided to try the Goring blend tea which was beautifully light and delicate.

What was so lovely about our afternoon tea at The Goring was that we weren’t rushed in any way.

They don’t turn the tables like they do for afternoon tea at The Ritz for example.

But out of those 22, only The Goring claims the top spot as winner of The Tea Guild's prestigious "Top London Afternoon Tea", beating out Claridges and The Ritz, two of London's most popular luxury teas, each which book up months in advance.

(credit: CARL COURT/AFP/Getty Images) Having lived in London for a few years now and having been lucky enough to sample many lovely afternoon teas with visiting family and friends, I wondered what it would take to top the excellent afternoon teas I had tried at rival hotels -- the service was smooth, the rooms well-appointed with luxe furnishings and live musicians playing the piano or harp in the corner .

The Goring is a classic English boutique hotel with ample royal heritage.

Opened in 1910, the property has intricate sculpted details and unusually wide hallways -- said to have been designed to allow free passage of ladies’ ball gowns.

The Goring offers five-star hospitality with abundant luxury, and its refined elegance is demonstrated through details such as the original Edwardian architecture and bespoke silk wallpaper.

Staff All staff is extremely courteous and afternoon tea at The Goring is a lovely treat.

At the time of my visit, the Traditional Afternoon Tea was priced at £25 which is outstandingly good value for such a high standard of service, delicious food, and a beautiful view.
