Canteen Covent Garden by Very Good & Proper - Dezeen

Hackney design studio Very Good Proper used glossy tiles salvaged from the London Underground in the Covent Garden branch of restaurant chain Canteen (+ slideshow).

Very Good Proper designed the bar stools and the brass wall hooks, as well as the brass and oak Canteen Utility Chair, which can be found in all Canteen restaurants.

The ‘Canteen Utility Chair’ is hugely popular, and is found in each Canteen restaurant, its design and style now instantly recognisable.

A slope leads down to the large oak herringbone-floored dining room with booth seating lined against a tiled wall (original tiles used by London Underground); the ‘Covent Garden Chair’ in various colours sits at the round tables, while the brushed brass Canteen Utility Chair lines the long tables beneath the windows.

The walls are lined with large windows and the interior design is light and subtle.

Nevertheless, we took our chances in the picnic bench lottery and managed to have the table to ourselves until our main courses.

The menu offers a range of starters, small meals, mains and daily specials as well as a decent choice of drinks.

Despite this, we still tucked in with gluttonous glee and by the time the dessert menu came, my friend’s broken heart was all but forgotten.

Canteen even proved itself in the relationship stakes – it was the cure to a broken heart!

It’s packed with restaurants selling food hailing from far flung places through to English classics, ranging from the downright awful to the absolutely divine, costing the earth or just a few pence scrounged from the back of the sofa.

A restaurant with that added something – a great view; an extensive wine list; an exceedingly good dish – is difficult to forget.

Hearty English fare – sausages with a small pile of creamy mash; a pie of the day (today: steak and kidney); a soup of the day; a breakfast menu.

In fact, there are a couple of places I know off the top of my head that serve sausages and mash to the same standard as Canteen.

Perhaps it had something to do with the familiarity of the dishes; Canteen succeeds in serving up a small menu of recognisable ‘comfort’ foods.
