Seafresh - London Restaurant Reviews | Hardens

“Not to be compared with Sheekey or Scott’s, but the fish ’n’ chips are better!”

This age-old Pimlico veteran has “become quite upmarket” nowadays, “serving lobster, oysters, and very fresh plaice alongside its excellent fish ’n’ chips”.

Replacing the old Vietnamese restaurant at the Belgrave Road end of Churton Street, this is the new squid on the block.

My family and I have eaten there for years, and our secret is to have the delicious and large fillets of cod grilled unbattered, after a couple of plates of crispy whitebait as starters, with lots of tartare sauce.

In the cool, dark interior slatted shelves are packed to the ceiling with whole and partially-sliced blocks, some with a richly patinated natural or waxy skin, some sliced, the runny ones young enough that the outside remains firm for a day or two as you let it ripen at home, large triangles, solid wedges mottled with natural seams of blue, red, yellow and green.

Take your hosts a whole Vacherin with its uniquely scoopable soft interior – arguably the world’s most delicious cheese.

Try a wedge of Caerphilly, moist, solid, strong-flavoured, a gulf apart from the crumbly white mass-produced stuff; or slice into a small barrel-shaped truckle of Cheddar, in its dense waxy skin far bolder than the yellow rectangles on a supermarket shelf.

Part fish and chip shop, part restaurant, Seafresh’s simplicity and good value menu has succeeded in drawing in the customers.

Located a stone’s throw from Victoria tube station, it appears to attract many a commuter for a substantial meal before heading home. The variety of fish on offer is extensive, with classics such as deep fried scampi, fillets of haddock or cod, calamari and fisherman’s pie as well as meat dishes such as roast chicken and lamb cutlets.

Our choices of the Seafood Platter and King Scallops were generously sized yet light portions.

A variation on crème brullee and filled with lemon sorbet, this was a perfect desert to finish off the meal.Despite dining here on a Tuesday night, Seafresh was very nearly filled to capacity by 8pm.

With its lack of pretence and good value for money, Seafresh is charming and delightful.

Chip shop dining areas can often seem to be merely an afterthought, but not so at Seafresh.

This modest Cypriot-owned restaurant has a more formal approach to its customers’ dining experience than the average chippy, giving the humble dish the respect it deserves with attentive service and a full wine list.

The menu contains a concise choice of seafood – mussels, scampi, scallops, squid – as well as whitebait and the usual species of fish.

The inoffensively decorated dining room has a serene but companionable air, with old boys reading the paper and couples enjoying a Cypriot beer and a first-rate fish supper together.

Quite an unlikely looking environment but then there is only one reason for coming here and that is to have fish, simply done and fresh.

I sense the most popular thing on the menu (looking around) is a rather good classic fish, chips and mushy peas.

I plan on going back to tuck into more adventurous things and i seem to remember that the fish soup is a classic.

If you love fish then you will love this place.

It has a take-away fish service as well which is neatly tucked in next door.
