London restaurant review: The Eelbrook, Fulham

Visiting on a balmy autumn evening, the converted groundskeeper’s shed of Eelbrook, white-washed and with floor to ceiling glass doors, feels charming and inviting: a theme consistent throughout the restaurant.

On arrival, assisted by two delicious elderflower Champagne cocktails, as well as by a waiter full of insightful recommendations, we were given plenty of time to browse Eelbrook’s hearty and diverse menu, kicking off with two of its small plates.

First, a wonderfully fresh grilled baby squid with coriander, followed swiftly on by a plate of delicately spiced lamb croquettes with ‘burnt’ shallot sauce.

Needless to say, the huge Valrhona chocolate mousse – we shared  just the one this time – was the perfect end to a very pleasant evening.

If you’re looking for a risk-taking culinary adventure, Eelbrook may not be what you’re after, but if it’s reliable seasonal staples, incredibly good value for money and friendly service you desire, then whether on a blustery evening or a summer’s day on the patio, Eelbrook will make you feel right at home.

Set in what was originally the common's groundsman building, Eelbrook opens up onto Eel Brook Common offering scenic seating for up to 22 people on its covered and heated terrace outside.

The Eelbrook menu promises an eclectic mix of dishes made from the best of British ingredients with influences from throughout the Mediterranean - with flavours from Spain, Italy, Greece and the Eastern Mediterranean (Turkey, Lebanon and thereabouts) and North Africa.

This promise translates into sandwiches like lobster roll, cucumber, chive mayonnaise for lunch, and appetisers of Lindisfarne rock oysters and courgette flowers on the a la carte menu.

Mains are a mix of fish and meat with choices like grilled wild bream, cod confit, and roasted poussin served with Middle Eastern influences of allspice rub and fattoush.

One note of warning: don't get Eelbrook confused with the nearby The Eel Brook pub, previously the Southern Cross, which also faces the common and is located on New Kings Road.

The Top 10 things to know about Eelbrook restaurant: 1) What do you get if you cross a parkside location, a head chef trained in some of Europe’s most lauded kitchens (Fävikan, Arbutus, Mark Hix) and an interior designed by the man behind both Hakkasan and Wagamama?

That means linen napkins but no tablecloths, a focus on quality ingredients and a fairly eclectic mix of dishes.

Here they’re small enough for intimacy but big enough to fit plenty of plates on - so go ahead and order that extra starter.

Little slabs of the restaurant’s eponymous fish come on crisp toasts with horseradish cream.

Add a few wafer thin slices of pickled shallot and you have the perfect side dish.

Venturing into Fulham and a lush green area of London to find a cute little eatery tucked into the local park… This is the best way to explore London.

If you live in London, or nearby and find that you don’t get out of your house enough to look around new areas and to take you out of your comfort zone, I would so recommend that you start choosing new restaurants to eat in and make it your goal to visit as many as you can, within time and cash constraints of course, regardless of location.

And because me and Alex are dessert fiends, we finished off a wonderful mean with the Dark Chocolate Delice with Salted Caramel and hazelnuts, as well as a strawberry eton mess, that went down ridiculously fast.

The Eton Mess was presented really unusually with all of the pieces laid out beautifully on the plate, which was a nice touch, and just as delicious as you would expect.

The type of place you could head to on a relaxed date night, or a girls night with wine and tasty food.
