The Malt House Fulham hotel restaurant pub gastropub Fulham London

In a cobbled square just two minutes walk from Fulham Broadway tube, The Malt House serves some of Fulham’s best food in its stylish bar, dining room and secret garden.

The Malt House mood blends chilled and relaxed during the day with vibrant and energetic by night, making it an excellent place with a crowd or dinner for two.

With great access to Central London and the South West, our six, sumptuous hotel rooms provide the perfect base for a Capital stopover.

The Malt House dates back as far as 1729, when it was called The Malster, and reopened in 2013 following a complete renovation and refurbishment under new management of the Jolly Fine Pub Group.

In February 2014 Marcus McGuiness left Malt House to become head chef of Auberge du Lac.

The head chef is Marcus McGuinness, formerly head chef of Hibiscus, who had worked at Hibiscus when it was in Ludlow, and before that at Champignon Sauvage and 5 North Street.

Example wines included Signal Cannon Chenin Blanc 2011 at £23 for a wine that you can find in the high street for around £8, Côtes du Rosa from Joseph Swan 2008 at £54 for a wine that retails at around £18, up to a few grander choices such as Margaux Château Giscours 1995 at £120 for a wine that will set you back about £73 in a shop.

The bill came to £71 a head, albeit with a good bottle of wine.

For me the Malt House is neither fish nor fowl: it is not delivering the high end (but still recognisably pub) food served by the nearby Harwood Arms, yet is rather fancy and expensive for a neighbourhood boozer.

It’s arguably Fulham’s most elegant pub; the décor and menus are a cut above those of average gastro boozers, treading a carefully drawn line between formal and casual.

Stargazy pie with whole sardines, salmon, cod and pancetta is a whimsical main, or choose the popular Malt House beefburger with punchy garlic and parsley fries.

The bed Rooms are serene, despite the brouhaha of Fulham outside, with pastel-coloured walls and air conditioning.

The breakfast A continental, delivered to your table, includes a bowl of fresh fruit, and warm homemade pastries, and cereals.

‘Fulham!’

First came the Harwood Arms – the first and only London pub to hold a Michelin star – and now there's the Malt House.

Like its award-winning near neighbour, it also has a high-profile founder (Claude Bosi, of the even starrier Hibiscus), and is now owned by chef Paul Merrett and restauranteur Greg Bellamy within the pair's Jolly Fine Pub group.

The cooking is the most creative and innovative aspect of this operation.

SW6 is strictly upper-crust now: Fanny would be quite satisfied.
