La Figa: worth a walk from the Wharf - thecriticalcouple

Before La Figa even opened its doors in Limehouse, it caused a bit of a stir due to the crude association of its name, though in what must be a decade on from that, the restaurant has demonstrated staying power, while local residents have not, it seems, been overly corrupted by their new found familiarity with Italian slang.
The staff (in both) are all Italian and there seems an air of authenticity about the place so that you really do feel you're getting a proper Italian meal, and certainly our dinner at La Figa was better than the tourist traps of Venice we experienced last year, and even the quality restaurants that came recommended to us also give or take.
The menu at La Figa is substantial, a page turner in fact, and unless you really despise Italian food (which would be odd on many levels), it would be hard not to find something you liked; if you love Italian food, you can easily find yourself paralysed with indecision.

Quantity however is not at the expense of quality and I guess you don't survive 10 years as an Italian restaurant if you can't do good pasta.

An archetypal old-school Italian in the heart of Wapping, Il Bordello gets jam-packed every night, so book well in advance if you want to enjoy its cracking atmosphere, spot-on service and hearty home cooking.
It's gets noisy as the with the buzz of conversation increases and the waiters' good-humoured banter starts to kick in - but everyone ends up having a thoroughly good time.
Cottoletta milanese, lasagne and four-cheese gnocchi are bestsellers, ready-made desserts (tiramisù, pannacotta etc) are displayed in in a glass cabinet and the directly imported, all-Italian wine list is peppered with good stuff.
It's worth noting that the restaurant does a brisk trade in takeaways, which is handy if you're in a hurry or neglect to book.

Bordello is Italian comfort food at its very best – fresh ingredients, simply cooked, and ginormous portions.
Maybe its the smiles of Bordello’s regulars, greeted like old friends as they walk through the doors… Or the loyal troop of ageing, grey-haired waiters, all of whom look way past their sixties, but still full of witty exchanges and sarcastic banter as they serve up some of the capital’s finest pastas and pizzas…And of course, the very heart-warming spicy tomato juice, spiked with just the right amount of Tabasco.
The menu here is extensive and you will be able to find every Italian classic under the sun from Spaghetti Vongole and Pizza Carpriciossa to more sophisticated dishes like Linguine with Sea Scallops or Crab Ravioli (which is very very good).
Bordello’s daily specials which are chalked up rustically on blackboards usually get the better of me.
For our other main course, we decided to be adventurous and stray from our usual staples of Tagliatelle Special (a fully loaded langoustine, scallop, prawn and shellfish pasta) and Pizza Il Bordello (with Parma Ham, artichokes, peppers) and try something new from the board – Ossobucco.

I can highly recommend this place after having there several times in the last year.
It's a great restaurant in terms of its layout, which means that it's always quite cosy/intimate on the rare occasions that it's not rammed.
I've had pizza every time and they are delicious, only just beating the mammoth starters on offer.
Polo matches are never that great an anecdote when you don't know the bloke.
Anyway, that is the small downside, but it just shows how popular IL Bordello is realy, that you get people taking groups there to show off and show others a good time.

But even the doughtiest puritan must be somewhat disappointed to learn that the 'Il Bordello special' is grilled vegetables.

Straightforward but convivial Italian restaurant that wins over diners with its traditional dishes and old-fashioned charm.
Attracting Wapping residents as well as tourists over the years, Il Bordello often sees queues out of the door during the week.
The food, complemented by an all-Italian wine list, is similarly straightforward.
This traditional style might not appeal to all modern sensibilities, but it’s hard not to be won over by the convivial atmosphere and jovial team of waistcoated Italian gents.
Il Bordello delivers what so many other restaurants lack: a touch of old-fashioned Italian charm.
