location

A cozy neighborhood pub situated directly above the Barons Court Theatre, The Curtains Up is yet another addition to the ever-expanding Geronimo chain, but it definitely has its own personality.

Tucked into a residential corner of Baron’s Court, the venue shares much of its clientele – as well as the bathrooms – with the performance space below, but also attracts a diverse mix of area office types and chill groups of locals in need of an attitude-free pint and a little conversation.

The main bar area is simple and homey, with large brass mirrors and enormous plush chairs for patrons to sink into with beers in hand, while through a doorway lies the light and colorful café space, with a coffee bar, paintings of Dalí, and rustic furnishings that would not look out of place in a countryside B&B.

Hours don’t run late and the pub’s liquor license only goes to 11pm on weekends, so the venue isn’t a destination for a raunchy night out by any means, but the mellow vibe – complemented by a seasonal menu of traditional British grub – is ideal for students from the nearby London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art who want to analyze Shakespeare over Syrah and Irish stew.

Minimally upscale but far from pretentious, The Curtains Up is perfect for a round with friends, whether it’s after work, after a show, or even during intermission.

The Curtains Up near Hammersmith is a quaint and friendly pub, serving freshly prepared food and offering a great selection of wines, ales and spirits to match.

As you might have guessed from the pub's name, this venue's all about the arts and subsequently houses the cosy Barons Court Theatre beneath its foundations.

Theatre-goers can grab a pre-show drink and a bit to eat at this iconic pub, before heading down to catch a performance from some top independent production companies.

If you aren't won over by the theatre however, then there's also live sport shown in the bar, as well as a weekly pub quiz and plenty of space to catch up with friends over a glass of wine.

On top of this, The Curtains Up also offers a full, freshly prepared food menu offering pub favourites like Beer Battered Cod, Burgers and Rib-Eye Steak.

The Curtains Up was taken over by the award winning pub group Geronimo Inns in July 2009 in Barons Court.

Situated directly above The Barons Court Theatre, the pub is a welcome local for the young and lively living in the area.

Split into separate areas for dining (24 covers) and drinking (66 covers), the décor in The Curtains Up channels a conservative bohemian feel akin to fellow Geronimo Inns site The Duke of Clarence in Kensington.

Situated directly above the Barons Court Theatre, and close to The London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA), The Curtains Up nurtures a buzzing thespian atmosphere by offering theatre-goers a range of special pre and post theatre menus.

With a staircase leading directly to the theatre in the cellars and vaults below, The Curtains Up also specialises in providing a range of perfectly timed interval snacks and drinks, which guests can pre-order before the show begins.

The Curtains Up is a well known Barons Court pub and it is also a watering hole I have used on a few occasions breaks rain breaks at the annual Queen's Club tennis tournament, which is held just across the road, spending some happy hours over a pint with great friends from New Zealand who regularly visit to attend the famous pre-Wimbledon tournament.

On one particularly wet Saturday in June, and with little hope of any play, I remember us all indulging in a particularly good burger and a bottle of Rose (well it might actually have been two), so I had reasonably high hopes of some decent food when I visited the gastro pub, which is part of the successful Geronimo chain, for a midweek supper in early December.

Like most Geronimo pubs I have visited The Curtains Up, which had a refurbishment earlier in the year, follows the same shabby chic design principal, which is generally pleasing to the eye, relaxed and comfortable.

The menu is sensibly concise and offers fairly standard gastro pub fare with a number of hearty British favourites included and other tempting choices including daily specials to make it interesting enough for most diners' tastes.

Service was well paced and the staff friendly and efficient and some lively background music added to the buzz of the place which like so many Geromino pubs offers the perfect package of good food and drink in pleasant comfortable surroundings.
