The Summerhouse - London Restaurant Reviews | Hardens

On the canal at Maida Vale, a fish restaurant open only for the summer months - perhaps a wise decision, as its non-al fresco attractions are severely limited.

Right from the moment we were told that this is a restaurant which didn't offer bread, we knew that this Maida Vale canal-sider wasn't going quite to be the idyllic experience we had hoped.

How can you have a fish restaurant without bread?

(Well, you could have a Chinese fish restaurant without bread, obviously, but that would be another kettle of, well you know') Bread, the staff of life, if no longer always free, is a basic part of the non-oriental hospitality business.

Anglo/French fish dishes require bread like love requires marriage, and horses carriages.

We've been away for a few weeks and the first thing to do on a rainy and typically gloomy London morning was to dig in to some brunch and get back into the groove of things... To go back to all things British and leave our Asian sojourn behind.

... Maybe the chef had not yet awoken from his slumber... I can't pinpoint what it was, but our first meal back in London after a couple of weeks away was not how we had planned to resume our culinary tour of the city.

We were then presented with two menus - a traditional breakfast menu that had all the basics of a hearty breakfast including eggs, bacon, juices and smoothies, and another menu that was a Sunday special menu with three items on it.

The Specials menu had the option of a beef, a lamb or a chicken each cooked in their own special way.

So, eggs florentine it would be for my wife and eggs royale for me... We also thought we'd get a bit more adventurous and order a mushroom on flatbread (which by the way turned out to be nothing like what the server attempted to describe to us).

What used to be Jason's in Little Venice and then the Boat House is now called The Summerhouse.

Open all year round, The Summerhouse is situated on the Union Canal a stone's throw from the famous Waterway restaurant, its sister restaurant, in Little Venice.

It's not the easiest place to find, tucked away behind a red door and a long wall extending along the bank of the canal, but if you manage to hit off on a sunny Sunday for a waterside meal you'll feel as though you've unearthed a hidden gem.

If you've got more than just your lunch hour to spare you can get on board for the boat trip - Jason's Trip run from Little Venice to Camden Lock, ideal for messing about on the river.

Food Review: London's Famous Roast Ducks | The Battle of Four ...

London – Who would have guessed that one of the most popular must-eat restaurant in London is Four Seasons, where hordes of Asians visit the restaurant for their popular Roast Duck.

Question is, which of these three restaurants in London does the best Roast Duck?

Be prepared to queue longer during the peak weekend meal hours, although you are almost sure to be rewarded with some really enjoyable roast duck and possibly the friendliest service amongst the three restaurants too.

The winning formula in London seems to be the fatty Irish Ducks, and of course, the palatable Sweet Dark Sauce which enhances the overall flavours well, balancing the otherwise greasy meats.

If your cravings for these Irish Ducks strike you before your next trip to London, you can always visit the Four Seasons restaurant at Capitol Piazza – although we would warn you about the lack of consistency here.
