Original Lahore Restaurant: Pakistani Kebab House | Edgware Road

Review analysis
food

Lahore Kebab House first opened its doors as a tiny eatery serving authentic Punjabi food.

At the time it was one of the first to serve up dishes like Karahi Gosht, Seekh Kebab and Grilled Lamb Chops, Recipes straight from the streets of Lahore.

Lahore Kebab House went on to set the standard for authentic Punjabi food.

After 25 years of expanding the Whitechapel branch to over 500 seats Lahore Kebab House branched out to three more locations, Hendon, Norbury and St. Johns Wood.

Each of these branches serve up great authentic food without any compromise.

Notoriously recognized for serving the rillest Pakistani food in London, Lehore Kebab House has been holding it down for over 40 years.

Grilled Lamb Chops (€8.25 or $10.30 USD).

Keema Curry (€7.75 or $9.65 USD).

Mixed Vegetable Curry (€6.00 or $7.50 USD).

Meal for two, £10 This open-air restaurant off Bangkok's Sukhumvit Road is nothing to look at and the fact I keep going back when there's no air-conditioning shows how much I must love the place.

Meal for two, £90 Bruce Poole's restaurant is a magnet for food and wine lovers.

From the basement comes a set dinner of 18 small but spicy dishes, while Michael patrols the dining room with one of the capital's most scrupulously chosen and keenly priced wine lists.

Meal for two, $100 The interior of this triangular building on Market Street is bathed in sunshine, and from the kitchen comes the freshest California cooking: oysters, crisp pizza, stunning salads and their signature roast chicken.

Meal for two, £100 Alumni of Locanda Locatelli, chef Marco and manager Giovanni are a proud double act in this small gilded cage off New Bond Street.

Every time I've driven past it I've asked myself why I was going to Croydon – or worse still, Ikea – when I could be inside this glittering palace of a Pakistani grill house.

We ordered the mixed grill for £12, which brought a bit of everything.

The all-important lamb chops had a good amount of meat on them, a proper cheek-coating crust with a not unwelcome citrus burst at the end as if they'd been doused in lemon juice as they came off the flame.

It was the same with the fish curry, the star of the main courses, not least because others were so disappointing.

The dry lamb curry which should be a dark, dense – and yes, dry – burst of flavour, was here slippery and wet and deflating.

Make a pilgrimage to this king of curry houses serving truly authentic dishes, from velvety dals to boldly flavoured tandoor-grilled meats and buttery nans.

It might not look like much, but Lahore Kebab House is a place of pilgrimage for curry lovers.

Queues snake out of the door at weekends, with diners travelling from afar to sample Punjabi-style tandoori grilled meat and generous portions of ghee-laden curry.

Piles of sweet onion bhajia and heavily spiced lamb chops might start off a meal, before the choice velvety dals, boldly flavoured curries (many of them on the bone) and buttery nans.

The house specials are worth ordering, especially the nihari and dry lamb curry, all served in utilitarian karahi bowls with minimal fuss.
